Has MFJ stopped printing manuals?????
« on: February 12, 2023, 07:15:11 AM »

I just received an MFJ-495 keyer from Ham Radio Outlet and there was no printed manual in the box.  I downloaded the appropriate manual, but that baby is over 50 pages long.  Wondering if MFJ has quit printing and requiring users to download.

Thanks for the swift reply.  Although I tend to agree with your sentiment, it doesn't answer my question.  Is MFJ following your sage advice or did they just forget to give me a manual?

The answer to your question is simple. Download it, kill a tree, and print it yourself.

As a 'Boomer" who has no qualms about killing trees whatsoever I usually download the manual from the site and then pick and choose the pages to print. NOT because I give a rats ass about trees (which are renewable BTW) but because 60% of manuals contain useless info not worth the paper and ink.

Yes - MFJ has stopped including a printed manual. Not sure when they started this practice but they have not included a printed manual with their products for quite a few years.

I like the idea of being able to download manuals as .pdf's. I do so for every piece of Ham equipment I own and keep them on the station laptop. That way, no matter where I happen to be, at home, on a Ham vacation, portable operations, Field Day, et cetera, I have the manuals available if / when I need them.

If I need some portion of a manual printed out for quick reference (like the various combination of key strokes to perform certain tasks on a MFJ Auto-tuner), it is easy enough to do. And I do not have to have all the extra pages like safety notes, warranty info, et cetera there in the way to thumb through.

And lastly, I do not have to take up shelf space to store all those manuals.

I do like the idea of going paperless for everything I can (bills, statements, manuals) because it reduces all the clutter that would otherwise accumulate. And sparing a tree or two is a nice side benefit.

That's exactly what I intend to do.  My question was about a PRACTICE of the manufacturer, which has been answered.

When the SHTF I will read my instructions on paper. Besides most of us old guys absorb material better from an in-hand printed page. It's a generational thing! Wife just got the latest and greatest I-phone. Did not even come with a charger let alone any instructions.  :(

I have an extensive on line library of manuals myself and I agree with what you have said.  It has been a very long time since I purchased anything from MFJ, so I was curious.  So thanks for your response.  I have to admit that I am a bit surprised and amused that my question triggered such a spirited general return.  I guess that's why I love ham radio.

At 79 years of age, I have to give a hearty "AMEN" to that!
