Need some sage guidance...
« on: February 13, 2023, 04:15:17 PM »

I have a 7600 and have used it on RTTY with the Signal Link. Would like to try it on PSK to run FT8 sometime.
Can someone steer me step by step what settings to set in the radio and what do I need to hook up to get the display on my computer? Not sure what software to use, not sure if the signal link would be required. Appreciate any help.

The main FT8 program to use is wsjt-x.  You don't need the signalink to use FT8.  You can do both the audio and the CAT control with a USB cable.

Should just need an USB A to B cable to go from rig to computer.  Download the WSJT-x software, and set it up.  If you get lost, contact me, and we can go over it on the phone.  We can do a screen sharing program called Anydesk which is free for personal use on the web. This will allow me to set up the software, you will still have to make some programing changes on the rig to use the USB B port on the rear. Should not have needed the signal link for RTTY either, that can be done over the USB port on the rear using programs like FLdigi.  I use N1MM loging software with the engine out of FLdigi runnuning under N1MM's control for RTTY and all other digital modes.  OF course the 7600 itself can run RTTY and PSK natively without a computer just like my 7610 with just a keyboard in the front USB connector, but I never have done that.  I prefer the programs with their macros' and integration to my logging program.

Lots of way to skin this cat, but bottom line you should just need the USB cable, the WSJT-x software and a network time protocol program running as a service on the PC.  I use Nettime. But there are many others. You will also need the driver from Icom japans. website for the 7600 to be installed on your PC before you plug in the rig.

USB Connectors on the Front and Rear Panel
USB connectors The IC-7600 has one USB connector on the front panel and one on the rear panel. You can connect a USB keyboard or USB flash drive to the front panel (type A plug) and connect a PC to the rear panel (type B plug). Using the CI-V data format and external software*, you can control the IC-7600 from a PC via the USB port. You can also transfer audio, both transmit and receive, via the USB port.
Download the USB driver now!
*Software is not supplied from Icom.

PSK31 is still a lot of fun.  Lately I've been enjoying contacts on 10m.  I've been a fan since I read about PSK31 back in the 1990's!

Olivia modes are also fantastic in challenging conditions.

I really enjoy learning about ops/rigs/power sources/etc during our QSO's.

I use FLDigi:  http://www.w1hkj.com/

I have monitored FT8 and don't see any joy there. Callsign/73.  However, the software has modes for meteor scatter which can be really fun!

The software and information for FT8 (and many other modes) is here:
https://wsjt.sourceforge.io/wsjtx.html

Have fun and keep on eye on your ALC meter.
