"OoooLA, OoooLA" ?
« on: February 14, 2023, 08:24:15 AM »

From time to time I'll be listening on various bands and I start hearing someone (never with an Id) saying "OoooLA!" repeatedly on a freq already in use.

Is this just another idiot does it mean something else?

Just another idiot. As the bands get better, expect to hear more.

Might be an idiot or some ham testing his rig , but can't hear the other stations. There lots of deaf stations out there, or could be a propagation path issue.
It's one of the mysteries of ham radio.

Hola is a word some Americans seem unfamiliar with, the English translation often heard in the US by the average appliance op tuning up on SSB.

He must not have read the appliance manual?

Somebody should tell that dummy to use a dummy load when he's tuning up.

Italians tuning. The power limit in Italy is high compared to many of us. Its a KW or 1.3 if I remember from 25 years a go. As the solar cycle goes up you will hear them a lot more in the Americas. On CB the Italians even use Hoooooola hoooola in the CQ calls.

I have heard this for 48 years and as SWMAN says it's only Spanish speaking hams, Central or South Americans, most likely  saying Hello in Spanish setting their radio up.

Not exactly. My friend who has an Advanced license loves to use this to make the meter swing on his amp.

It just proves you don't need a receiver to transmit!
