The problem seems to have been with a batch of screens that ICOM bought a couple of years ago. The early production runs seemto have been very reliable, then problems started to appear in radios that were just a few months old. As I understand it, ICOM reported them back to the screen manufacturer and the design/production fault was addressed, so the current production runs seem to be immune to it. ICOM were worried about the potential damage it would do to their reputation with a high proportion of their flagship radios failing and have been receptive to fixing the problem even on radios that have come out of warranty. I guess that if you bought a lightly used unit built around two years ago, it could still fail on you, but my understanding is that ICOM would still fix it for you...
