VU4 coming soon
« on: February 14, 2023, 02:22:55 PM »

This just came across my Twitter feed:

Gopan (M0XUU / VU3HPF)  @vu3hpf
We have received permission to operate from Andamans as VU4T. Myself and Ram VU2JXN will be active from 2nd March to 5th March 2023. More details are on QRZ page.

Great times are at hand, and soon there will be DX for all—although more for some than for others.

Oh nice.

I guess that this means that the hundreds of Bouvet jammers will only be bored for another 2 1/2 weeks.

Less. 3B7 comes on in less that that.

I was unable to work the last VU4 DXpedition. I am not overly optimistic about my chances with this one, but will certainly give it a shot! It's going to be a busy next few weeks for me with 3B7, CY0, and now VU4 all coming up for potential ATNOs.

VU4 will indeed be tricky. If I were you I'd contact them sooner rather than later and request that, if possible, they give a little extra consideration to east coast NA during the very short openings on 15 and 17m, around 14z to 17z. You may have better luck long path, too. Surprised you haven't gotten Sable Island already; they're always on, every couple of years. They should be a chip shot for you.

Oh good! All the casual operators will be calling them for hours, so the rest of us can work the other mults and more Qs!

Nice. Perhaps I can add a bandfill or two.

I just looked - I've only got them on 12m phone. CW/Digital would be nice as well.

Yes, it would indeed be a chipshot if there was any real recent activity from there. Since I have been a ham, only 383 QSOs have been made from CY0, excluding the 2016 activity by CY0/VA1AXC which was 20m SSB only, and occurred just after I started using HF. My antenna back then was not good on 20m, and looking at the spots, he spent most of his time in the extra portion of the band, and I was only a general at the time.

Sounds like a healthy sized operation in March. I could use a few band fills for sure. I'd LOVE to get them on 6... and 160 but 6 would be especially nice. 12 away from dxcc on that band. You should have no problems Mason getting this one in the log!

They'll be a bit tricky on 6 at this time of the year for sure. There was a really big 6m operation around Field Day weekend back in 2008 and that's the only 6m QSO I've had with Sable. 160 will be an absolute cakewalk. I worked one of the operations there (and another one on St. Paul) using 5W QRP on Topband CW in the past.

Sable I will be a ATNO for me but I really want to get the on 6m.  End of March so possible here in WV.  This group went to ST Paul Island in 2019 and I got them on 6m phone which was my first 6m DX.  I am sitting on 96 so I have my fingers crossed.   This DXep was supposed to happen in 2020 but got delayed by COVID.

They could see Bouvet like weather that time of year.

Reading the info on the VU4T QRZ page, they have set expectations: Holiday style, 40-10 m, no FT8/FT4, no QSL cards (only LOTW).
I'm only needing VU4 on 160 m, so no chance of that. But I'll look forward to hearing them, and maybe one or two QSO.

Good luck, and may the bands be ever in your favor. That Sable Island operation I mentioned from 2008 was my first-ever QSO on 6m, and that remained my only 6m QSO for another year or two. It was on SSB as well!
