If a 400 thousand dollar missile was used to shoot down $12 Dollar Ham Radio Balloon, this will be so embarrassing we may never hear from the government about it. It's strange we keep hearing they don't know what those objects were, yet they know they're not Chinese.

it's a sticky situation.  If this is true, then launching high altitude hobby balloons is probably off limits from here on.

That's our tax dollars used to destroy a perceived threat!
Wouldn't it be cheaper to install equipment to identify it?

they should have shot it with a small caliber gun, so small the balloon would slowly deflate and land intact, of course thats in a perfect world.
It would probably run out of gas  way before it gets even close to the ground.

They did try that.  It didn't do anything, even using a gatling gun on an F22.

The missile worked.

Cost seems to be an issue.  I could care less. Bif you think it's a threat or otherwise isn't responding, do the safer thing and a killshot is what is needed.

Had it not been for a couple just blathering pukes in congress running their mouths we never would have had this issue in the first place.

I don't know. If our technology cannot tell the difference between small, low cost hobby balloons and balloons with sufficient sensors to be used to compromise national security and transmit that massive amount of data half-way around the world, we have even more problems than I think we do!

I'm convinced the shooting down of the three objects over Canada and the US was a reaction designed to deflect some of the criticism for the delayed downing of the Chinese balloon.

The frequency ranges of ham equipment is know to the military all it requires is actively scanning the ranges.
And during a visual flyby it's easy to recognize the transmitter by its size ranges.

Where the problem lies is that the military agencies are not notified prior to launching the balloons
And who know whether the crew has been or are trained to recognize a beacon signal

So what choice do they have but to take action.

You aren't supposed to huff the helium out of them.

Paint is also a no-no.
