pyle usb mic to icom 7300?
« on: February 17, 2023, 09:17:30 PM »

picked up a pyle pdmikt120 usb mic that is intended for use with a pc....
its a condenser mic...can I get buy with just hooking up the usb cable's black mic ground and red cable to the rigs mic voltage source or is there more trickery involved.
there is a fancy printed circuit board in the mic housing...donno what its intended purpose is.

You said it yourself. This is a USB mic intended to be plugged into a PC, which will treat it as a sound card audio source. On the USB cable there is a +5v power wire, a power ground, and 2 usb serial data wires. The complicated circuit board has a special ic which converts analog audio to digital, and formats the data for usb.

I would use it for its intended purpose rather than trying to splice into the microphone element to connect it to the 7300. And I don’t think the 7300 has appropriate drivers to allow the mic to be plugged directly into its usb jack.

 :)I use a similar mic.

Trust Mico condenser amp with 3.5mm plug. Comes with a little USB adapter.
I kept the usb adapter aside for digi modes, removed the 3,5mm plug .
Centre conductor goes to audio in , screen to mic screen. Mic is powered from rig.
Then on the PTT side I use a pigtail that connects to a foot switch.
Best Mic I ever had , way better than SM8, SM20 , PR781 , MD100, MD200 etc.
Totally rf immune if connected correctly.
I now have 7 of these mics, connected to : TT Orion, IC-781 , FT-1000mp , FT-2000....
Cant beat them.

So does the bottom of the Pyle microphone have a USB jack or a 3.5mm phone jack? Or perhaps a cable with a 3.5mm plug on the end?

If it's not USB, perhaps the USB converter is built in to the cable. If it uses a standard USB cable, the converter is built in to the microphone.

The Trust Mico microphone has a standard 3.5mm cable, which you can either plug into a laptop mic jack directly, or into the provided 3.5mm to USB converter.

Add:

To plug a 3.5mm plug into the IC-7300 you need to make or buy and adapter to convert it to the Icom mic jack. Not super cheap to purchase. (Then you have to plug in a PTT switch also.)

I suspect the Pyle Mic. has an inboard analog to USB converter.
(So not suitable) for analog connections.
Just saying that similar 3.5mm Mics can work very well with most rigs.
(Ones with external USB adapter.)
That adapter / Pigtail you showed should work well with 3.5mm condenser mics.
I wired my own and connected to 8 pin HEIL plug, because the HEIL has space for Mic. Cable and pigtail.

The IC-7300 does have USB , so it might work after drivers are installed.
You just have to wire the PTT.

mic has a usb input....very interesting reply.
I only paid 20 bucks with an eye towards modifying it to use with my icom 7300...so am I correct in assuming that I can bypass the pc board in the mic and use the condenser mic in the housing with the 7300's supplied mic voltage with only hooking up the condenser cartridge voltage wire and ground wire or do I need additional protection to keep the 7300 from going up in smoke?

:)No, Try the Mic. as is and plug the USB plug into Icom 7300.
Let drivers for mic auto install, and test it.
I would not bypass the circuitry as it does the signal processing like Noise cancelling , tailoring and compression.
This is the beauty of these mics.
The Trust has all this inboard as well, but the analog to usb converter is a loose item that can be removed.

If your mic works via the USB, then you will just need to arrange a foot switch or similar to PTT the radio.

You might need to tell the radio via the menu that the audio source will be usb.
That is the beauty of the hobby--experimentation.

:)If you cannot get it to work,
Try one of these , and wire straight into 8 pin plug, or use adapter as listed above.

Well worth the effort.
