Remote DXpeditioning

Looks like the theoretical is about to get real.  These guys are going to be running RIBs and a fully-remote 6 meter operation via Starlink.

Two questions:
1. How does a reasonably sized powered cat (not sailboat) have the range?, and
2. Is  /MM activity vs. land-based valid for anything?

6m grids for the VUCC award as well as the Fred Fish Memorial Award can be /MM.  I picked up two rare grids last summer /MM.  EL58 and EL84

The RIB folks were part of the Baker Island DXpedition, at least it was them that developed this.

They know how to do this to make it legal for DXCC.  So, relax.

None of these would count for DXCC either, just for VUCC and the CQ Magazine grid field award.  Some good grid fields for that.

If the RIB is on land, it counts for DXCC.  If it is on water, it counts for /MM.

Where the operator is located means nothing.

And, at least these awards:  VUCC, Fred Fish, and the CQ Field award allow /MM just fine.  Heck, I'm pretty sure even WAZ allows it as long as you convince them where the boat was.

A few tidbits about VUCC. Out of the 32,400 4-digit maidenhead grid squares in the world, the highest claimed and approved by ARRL is 1,700. They all count, no matter if they are land, wet grids, or guess you can call 'em slick grids for ice. Operation is possible from 1, 2, 3, or 4 grid squares simultaneously. Just be on the border or intersection and provide evidence as required in the rules. For FFMW, there's 488 grids in the lower 48 states. Grids we share with Canada and Mexico count for FFMW, even if the operator isn't in the US when the contact is made. The number of ops having all 488 approved were low a few years ago, but has grown to 40 as of today.

Hoping to add to my VUCC count this summer for DX and FFMW. Already worked 7 new grids in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, and Peru with recent openings, and 4 have been confirmed.

Cool, I get a new grid in Spain this AM on that crazy opening.    I really need Peru.   I just need four more for DXCC on 6.

6m has been wild the last few days for this time of year.

FYI for satellites, the highest is 2200. (Myself, I only got to 720 before moving QTH. My 6m was at 452.)

I think you mean 1, 2 or 4... I'm not sure how you would do 3 without a very weird arrangement. :o  As for a 'grid corner', been there done that... went to the Nevada desert once and gave out 4 grids to stations all over NA.  8)

For FFMW, there's 488 grids in the lower 48 states.

On satellites, it's called the Gridmaster award and given out by AMSAT. (I earned award #12.) Admittedly, it's easier to earn than the Fred Fish award... because you can predict when the 'propagation' will be there (satellite pass), there are no 'skip over' zones and making a sked for a needed grid is much easier to arrange.  :)

FFMA, in my opinion, is the most difficult award there is. Far fewer have achieved it than #1 Honor Roll. It's my "holy grail" that I know I'll never complete being on the east coast. Even with a 6 element LFA and 1500W, the days with poor propagation combined with the rarity of the grid make it impossible from here. Still won't stop trying.

Night gathers and now my watch begins. It shall not end until I reach Top of the Honor Roll

Great times are at hand, and soon there will be DX for all—although more for some than for others.

Yep another brain fart, must have been thinking states rather than grids at the moment. (WY, UT, CO) That makes a total of 4 brain farts in my post since I typed FFMW rather than FFMA 3 times. But old codgers like me have an excuse.

Please take that part of my post about the grids as a bit of tongue in cheek teasing... no insult intended.  ;)  It's one of those things that 'if you've done that' it immediately jumps out at you, that's all. And yes, I walked all around my vehicle with a camera taking a video showing the tire parked next to a "landmark", etc. It was a once in a lifetime trip for me, I absolutely loved it. (Pics here if anyone is curious: https://www.qrz.com/db/N4UFO/P )

And every time I see/hear FFMA my brain wants to think instead of some kind of professional martial arts competition.  "And here he comes, folks! The sport's number one professional FFMA fighter!!!"  ;D

Back on topic... the small boat with the RIB gear displayed on AA7JV's QRZ page... WOW. Very impressive. Just awesome in my opinion. I kinda hope this idea catches on. It could make a huge difference in activating entities in the future. I bet certain 'approval folks' would see that as more professional and less obtrusive than a crew of guys with tents, etc. I know it's not traditional (for us) but like everything else... one must adapt to a changing world.  :)
