Imax 2000
« on: February 21, 2023, 09:00:29 AM »

My Imax broke into after 13 yrs in the air. The antenna was a good one stood through many storms over the years. It just dry rotted.. This time i plan on painting fiberglass antenna to help prevent dry rotting. Any recommendations on a gel coat or paint. Thanks for any advice.. Stay Safe..
P. S. Where is a good place to get a 95ft piece of coax the big stuff. Again Thanks..

Painting fiberglass is tricky. I bought quad spreaders from Max Gain Systems and pained them, carefully following their instructions to the letter. Within a few years the paint started to flake off. You might want to go with marine products, specifically made for painting fiberglass.

Check into a finish like Awl-Grip.

I went to ace and the paint guy sold me a nice primer (tinted for me) and a semigloss latex paint.  I will probably have to repaint it again, but it sure looks better than seeing the strands of fiberglass blowing around.  It had zero effect on the antenna performance (hex beam.)

Coax is available from many places -- google what you're after and find the best price.

Why not consider an aluminium antenna instead?  Friend had a Magnum 11 meter antenna up continuously for 35 years (1967 to 2002), with no issues.

Put PVC pipe over the next Imax and let that take the beating from the sun instead of the fiberglass antenna.
I ran a 2000 years ago and made contacts on 10 thru 17 meters. Maybe not the most efficient but it got the job done. 10 meters is hoping now with Europe and South America coming in strong. I am considering getting another one just for 10.

I see the IMAX 2000 has been replaced by the MaxOptimizer.

Probably because it is illegal in the US to market
metal CB antennas, unless they have enough
insulation to withstand falling across a power line.

That’s why, for example, the CushCraft 10m Ringo is
“NOT FOR USE ON CB”, in spite of the fact that
it is tunable from 10m to 12m.  Apparently some
Congress Critter’s cousin got electrocuted putting
up an antenna, and this was his revenge.

Of course, aluminum antennas will work just fine,
but antennas sold for CB market will often be
cheaper because it is a bigger market.
