Hy-Gain Tailtwister rotor won't turn clockwise
« on: February 23, 2023, 09:57:26 AM »

My Hy-Gain Tailtwister suddenly stopped turning clockwise. It turns counter clockwise just fine, but is currently at 225 degrees and that's as far clockwise  as it will go. The DCU-2 controller sends the code motor.
Any ideas where to check first? I know it is possible to check the rotor from the ground, but not sure where to begin.
Thanks for any help you can give.

Most rotator motors change direction by reversing the DC polarity. I'm not familiar with your specific controller, but perhaps start there and see if that's happening.

Resistance measurements are given the manual.  It could be a limit switch problem in the rotator, but with the basics first.

If you know someone who also has a 'Tailtwister', ask to borrow their controller.  This would determine if the problem is in the rotor or the controller.

Table 2 provides on the ground resistances to measure.

One of the wires disconnected at the rotor or control .Rotor will turn to end a stop

Has anyone watched the antenna actually stop at 225 degrees?  It could continue to rotate and the sending variable resistor fails beyond that spot.  Just a thought…it has happened to me.  Good luck on fixing it. 73, Noel, W9FR

Bet dollars to donuts it's a fractured ring gear and not an electrical problem.

yes, the rotor will turn counter clockwise but not clockwise. If I continue to turn it CCW it will eventually be pointed due south then it will be stuck there, as there is no turning it back. Turns in one direction but not the other and it is currently at 225 degrees, so not a faulty pointer or such.
I am believing it is in the rotor itself and not any electrical connections.
Guess it's time to go up the tower.
Thanks for all the ideas.
