2nd attempt to post?????  Clean the can with acetone or brake cleaner to remove ALL TRACES of old oil. Apply oil resistant RTV to leaking area. Let totally cure then add new oil. DXE also sells.

Antonis,

The O-ring is probably cracked or split.  Turn the load so the leaking end is up and secure it so it does not fall over.  Remove the clamp and the back end should come out.

There are videos on Youtube to explain the procedure.

Do it the right way.  RTV is hack.

BTW, thank you for the Qs in ARRL CW last weekend.

Ok so my computer says the site referenced is a possible danger....(work computer) unable to look at pix. The "hack" repair has been working on a Cantenna for about 7 years now  Mine was not an oring issue so ,yes, if it is an oring by all means fix the failed part. Suppose it is a Bird dummy load with the seal at the end. Here in MT we call it "Farmerized".   ;)

The photos are on his Google cloud drive.  A Bird load sits horizontal, not vertical like a Cantenna.  The best way is to fix it correctly, not use a typical hammy hambone repair.

Would you want your mechanic to fix an oil leak in the engine block of your vehicle by using RTV, even if he said it worked for him for 7 years?

BTW, did you ever get a response from CQ about the single op assisted rules?   I've been waiting for you to get back to us and tell us we're wrong.    ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) ;)

Never contacted CQ as I decided it was not worth the effort as did not have to be right. (or wrong)

There are several products on the market that are forms of RTV that more recent vehicles use in place of paper, rubber or cork gaskets. One is "The right stuff" by Permatex part number33694 used to seal oil pans and rear end diff covers. Just sayin.

Having grown up in the NYC area the somewhat confrontational and otherwise grater NYC area attitude is evident and understandable. I got out before it took hold. Living in an electric ant hill just was not for me. Enjoy the hobby, good DX and stay well. David

Is it the O-ring?
Bird makes both O-rings and bladders for this unit.  Both are field replaceable.  And they use a "refined mineral oil" in the unit.  I am sure they still stock it.

Where is the leak?

Years ago I had a Yamaha 225 outboard that developed a leak in the water jacket outside the cylinder. It was due to a flaw in manufacturing. Not many options. About a 1/2 hole when dremeled out.

I suggestion that I took was dremel out the bad aluminum. Use jb weld. Before dry add some cut outs of aluminum can. Cover with more jb weld.

That area was under pressure whenever the engines ran.

Boat was in florida and ran it 10 days a month, 12 months a year. And it was fine when I sold it 12 years later.

If it’s just a gasket change, vs a crack in the metal itself,  id change the gasket.

Yet you kept implying that I was wrong and that you didn't like the rule.

Very telling....

Hi,

The typical oil used now is just refined mineral oil.  You can buy this at a pharmacy or from a veterinarian as it can be used as a laxative for people or animals.

Tnx for your replies.
A problem that I had to solve last time I opened the dummy load
was that the trapped air IN THE dummy load
couldn't be relieved when I installed the leaking cap.
I will try to fix this next days and come back.
