what advice for working Indonesia DX with this set up ...
« on: February 26, 2023, 05:22:59 AM »

Central MN QTH.  low noise floor.

Hexbeam at 40'.  40M monobander is at 75'.  Usually the 40M 2 element beam when tuned up hears better on 20M than the hexbeam.  This is particularly true on weak signals where I can sometimes copy signals from the far east on the 40M antenna that I can't hear at all on the hexbeam. (this is typically when listening in on KE5EE around 12:00 zulu)

I do an antenna dance switching from 40M for listening to hexbeam for xmit.  mostly I don't get heard using the 600w amp and the hexbeam for xmit.   I have recently acquired a 1.5Kw amp.  Tuner is rated for 1.5KW

To date I have not run an amp into the 40M monobander.

Just looking for some suggestions on what might be the best approach.  Being able to hear that part of the world is a recent development.

You should be able to work Indonesia on your hexbeam and a bit of power via FT8 every day.  I know I can here in WV.  Once in a while via phone.

You should be able to work YB on 20M SSB with the Hexbeam and 1.5kW.  There are a lot of YB hams actually.  So you might try CQing on 20M at the times when YB is open to your area.  On 20M its usually 23 - 02Z here in VT.  15M is also an excellent band for YB.  Here the good window is 13 - 15Z.  Almost always, short path is the best from here.

Also, don't rule out 40M SSB short and long path.  YB has become much more active with DXers in the last decade.

Indonesia and the area in general have reliable signals every afternoon on 15M short path.

Try FT8 on 20m most mornings around 14z-15z. Around 00z to 01z on 15 has worked for me as well and pre-dawn on 40 I've netted a few, but not many over the years--namely because I'm not generally up at that time of the day.

Night gathers and now my watch begins. It shall not end until I reach Top of the Honor Roll

Great times are at hand, and soon there will be DX for all—although more for some than for others.

YB is usually coming in here on 10 meters starting around 2300Z.  Pretty easy to work on most days.  My antennas setup isn't as good as yours either.
