"There's not many amateur DXers who are also Antarctic professionals out there who are more experienced than me...."
Maybe you should have gone to Bouvet with a radio then.

John: Why on Earth would I want to pay $25,000 to go to Bouvet with a radio when I get paid much more than that to go to various places in the Antarctic & sub-Antarctic on official government funded expeditions?
Before anyone is misled into being impressed by that, since you brought this up:
1.Who pays you “much more than that” to go to an island,
2. What specifically do they pay you to do once they bring you there, and
3. How many times have you been to Bouvet?
There, There, Don, I think you need go take one of your Valiums and have a nice lie down!

Guess that’s all you can come up with to avoid answering. Good show!
1) British Antarctic Survey, Australian National Antarctic Research Expeditions, Antarctic Logistics & Expeditions PLC
etc.2) Install, maintain and operate radios and other telecommunications infrastructure (just in case you're a nit-picker, that involves lots of zipping around in Zodiacs
etc.)
3) Sailed past Bouvet Island several times on various government icebreakers & supply vessels en route to/from Antarctic mainland. Never had any professional reason to land there because the Island is Norwegian and there is no British or Australian telecoms infrastructure there to maintain.
Trust that answers your questions in sufficient detail to put you back in your box and throw away the key on this particular thread, Don.
I believe my concerns regarding Antarctic & sub-Antarctic DXpedition safety are now sufficiently out there in the public domain for the 'powers that be' to take notice and take action, so I will not be posting any further comments regarding the matter on eHam.net DX forum.
