This problem existed once the SECOND radio operator got on the air!
"You don't need a receiver to transmit!"

The hobby isn't dying, only the hobbyist.

wow .. its sad.. yep soap box here..

when does it stop
when do radio ops start working togther
when does it stop

why do people have to key up and not listen before keyin.

LETS KEY OVER EVERYONE..... iam running 3000000 million watts I OWN THE FREQ...
STOP ALREADY DANG IT
my god its so stupid .. its gettin old. its pushin people away ..

why would i want a young kid or teenager to come into this hobby ???????????
my god ..

enough is enough people ...........

What you are really hearing is the result of over half the urban ham population dealing with a high noise floor (S9 or higher).

All these stations don't hear the other hams for their end fed. 100 watt signal is below the noise floor at their urban location. They hear the QRO station but little else.

I call CQ with 100 watts here in the desert and maybe some one will come back to me. Call CQ with 1500 watts and I have a pileup. This is indicative of everyone's receive noise floor.

I picked my ranch location for the low noise floor(S-0). I can always take care of the out bound signal with the amplifier.

Todays hams, many times, don't have the option of a ham club and an Elmer to guide their path in ham radio.

Buy the ARRL handbook and start reading.

Don't see your points as being accurate; especially 1500 watts to receive more than maybe a call back.

All the pileups for POTA stations running 100 watts and many with end fed (endfedz).
They have pile ups for hours on end with 100 watts.

Even more so, is to listen to the QRP Stations working the POTA Stations successfully with 5 watts.

Right, it's your 100 watts and a wire making the trip.

Not the guy with a 190 foot tower and a 5 over 5 stack on it whom is working you.

Life is too short for qrp, and erp is created at the dryer socket.

That might be the case in the North East where the population density is 50 times higher than in the South West. When I hear a POTA station they spend more time calling CQ than logging contacts.
That East Coast population density surely is a 'thing', especially on 40m SSB park activations.  Out here in the West we only have a handful of stations to work within 400 miles on 40m.  They're all next-door to each other back East...

But it is actually pretty easy to generate a pileup at a park running 100w to a full size wire antenna on a 32 ft mast (no base-loaded, ground-mounted crap antennas) even operating from the West.
Parks On The Air has a scheduling page, and if you've listed your park activation and then go out and call CQ on CW from a park the RBN picks you up, the POTA spotting system grabs it and BANG you have a pileup even on a weekday, on CW :-)  It's great fun,  I always get an answer to my CQ within a few calls on 15, 17 or 20m CW, and I work 150 to 200 people in a couple of hours on weekdays from a few of the mountain parks in Colorado.  It's the most fun I've had in years :-)

Hey Shane, Pay attention much?
Do you even know what POTA is?
There are no POTA stations running 5 over 5  stacks on portable 150 foot  towers in the park.

Huh??  How about the park hunters, working all of us at the parks?

Although I suspect most are using a tribander at 35 ft and not a stack on 150 ft tower :-)

Don't know, but I just got off the air (14.237) with CE3WB in Santiago, Chili. He uses a rotatable dipole.

The Next Big Thing in amateur radio will be PPOTA (Pickle Parks On The Air) if the current trend continues.  ::)

OK, I know this topic has wandered, but it recently was about the antenna(s) that home stations use to work weak portables in the field, like at POTA listed parks.

So you worked a guy in Chile with a rotatable dipole, and you used an Endfedz EF-20.  Were EITHER of you portable at a park ???????

Get on the air more and listen. All the Western VE parks were on the air last night
talking to France and England. Ten meters was open to Japan last night. Here's the deal, just like Real Estate it is location, location, location.

If you are 100 feet above see level and have your 150 foot tower you are 250 feet total. If you're at 580 feet above sea level with a wire 20 feet in the air your antenna is at 600 feet. It's like me being at your location with a 500 foot tower.

Unless you're in Florida, most parks have high elevation. Set up on an overlook you don't need much. One of the POTA stations last night made a Contact almost 1500 miles and the other station was running only 5 watts!!!

Turn on your radio, listen and learn...
