FT1000d or TS690sg...reasons?
« on: March 05, 2023, 03:35:17 PM »

This is for a backup rig. Am getting a headache from arguing with myself. TNX in advance.

TS-590SG is still a current model, and well respected at that.

FT-1000D is getting a little old now, and potentially needing repairs like caps or display. Well regarded in it’s day, but…

Really, it comes down to which grabs your heart more.

Do you need 6 meters or not?  If so, 690?  Do you need to actually be able to pick it up and move it?  If so, 690.  Would you like 200 watts?  FT1000

The TS 590SG is a very fine radio. Easy to operate, only a few menus to set and forget, with out a waterfall. If there is a drawback it is the
built in low power speaker. I added a Phonema speaker, problem solved. You'll never be sorry you bought the Kenwood.

I am not familiar with the Kenwood; it' s probably a fine choice. However, I have been using my 1991 model FT-1000D for 30+ years without a failure. It' s enabled me to achieve # 1 DXCC, as well as using it to enjoy many long ragchews. It is indeed old, but still a good rig. The Kenwood would be a more modern and flexible choice; just kind-of depends on what you prefer.

For a backup radio, I’d stick with a currently manufactured radio priced under $1.5 K. Why worry about parts or service availability on a long discontinued radio?

Also, I don’t know if you’ve experienced/used a panadapter/waterfall. I would never buy another radio without one built-in. An Icom 7300 or Yaesu’s FTDX-10, FT-10 would be my backup radio choice.

Well, you asked. In my opinion, neither. When so many cheap new transceivers with so much more capability are readily available.

I echo the other comments. The Kenwood is a newer radio with advanced features. I have had a new FT-1000 (upgraded to 1000d) since 2001. It has never failed. I am replacing it with an Icom IC-7800 that a friend is discarding after acquiring an Elecraft K4D. The 1000D is still in operation and I use it one week every month.

Every radio is subjective, according to the user's wants/desires. In short, the "best" radio is the one YOU like to use. Good luck in your quest.

Well a TS-690S was a Kenwood model :-)

Old, not new, if that had been what he meant, but obviously not...

Just bought a 590sg and am amazed at the audio. Great receiver, plenty of options for tweaking audio in and out. Versatile software, easy to set up. It lacks a waterfall, but that is a small loss for all the other benefits. (I have a panadapter with another transceiver- nice accessory, but I do not use it often.)

SSB/CW just sounds more pleasent to listen to on an analog receiver. If you plan to do contesting/CW you can replace the Yaesu filters with INRAD ones for better selectivity.

SSB sure does sound nice on a Kenwood TS850 and TS950.  The TS950SDX might have been one of the best analog radios ever built!  850 not too far behind it.
