Odd-looking Dot-Like Signals On HF
« on: March 18, 2023, 04:29:21 AM »

For the past several months I've seen odd-patterned signals consisting groups of parallel lines of dots in the 8 - 9, 10- 11, and 14.5 - 15 MHz portion of the HF band. I'm using an Airspy HF + Discovery and am looking at the waterfall.  The signals not always present, they come and go with band condx.  Disconnecting the antenna makes them disappear so they're definitely legit. Been a SWL over 60 years and this one's got me stumped.  Wonder if anyone's seen these on the band?

I've tried posting a .JPG image here but no luck, forgot how it's done, a senior moment I guess, hihi.  Tnx and 73's.

Upload your image to a third party hosting site then include the link to the image here in your post. There is a "sticky topic" on the eHam forums about this if you need more help and instructions.

Interesting about the dots. Maybe someone else on eHam knows the answer.

Seen?? How about "heard"?... what do they sound like?
It sounds like you may have a local interference problem.  Something is generating noise in the area.  Your antenna is simply picking it up.
If it comes in often enough you might be able to DF it and locate the source.  What are you using for an antenna now?

Thank you both for the responses.  The signals have a spark-like sound and appear on the waterfall like a player piano roll.

I'm using a ground mounted 30' vertical with a few dozen in-ground radials.  Yes, verticals are noisy and omnidirectional so I can't determine the direction of the signals. The fact that these signals only appear when the bands are open make me tend to think they are not local.

Tnx also for how to get photos posted and again, thanks for your responses.
