JT65 Question
« on: March 14, 2023, 04:24:17 PM »

I have worked a lot of FT8 and FT4 with wsjt-x with no problem, so I thought I would look into the JT modes. (I'm using a Rigblaster Advantage interface.) When I go to the MODE tab and click on JT65, everything seems to come up properly, I get signal indications on the waterfall display and the system clock is accurate, but I'm not decoding anything. Any idea why not? If I switch back to FT8, everything's normal and functional.

maybe the signals aren't JT65? do they cycle?

There aren't many JT65 signals now that FT8 is so popular.
hamspots.net can be used to see when the last signals were spotted.

Thanks for the input. Signals I’m seeing on the waterfall do look like FT8, not JT65. OK….back to FT8 and FT4.

JT65 was virtually abandoned for HF back in 2017 when FT8 hit the scene. There is some still used on VHF/UHF moon-bounce etc. I still don't have WAS on JT65.  I lack 8 states. I abandoned it for FT8 and never went back in time to pick them up. The only way I could get it would be to make schedules. And it just isn't that important to me to even try.  So yes, just forget about JT65. It is in the past and gone. It did work well, and will go "deeper" than FT8, and JT9 will go deeper yet. BUT both are painfully slow. Everyone voted with the feet (mouse) and clicks on either the FT8 or FT4 button.  :)

Oh! one other thing JT65 has a pleasant sound on the air. But you can grow a beard waiting for a contact to finish.

JT65 was the best! I could hit the head, make a sandwich, and return before the QSO was over.  :)

With some of the QRSS modes used on the LF bands, you can go to bed at night and get up in the morning before receiving the 73.

Not sure about all of that, but you could for darn sure go hit the head without fear of missing anything. :)

Remember JT9? I got a WAS on JT9 mode (which came after JT65). That's basically impossible to do now too.  :(

<BRAG WARNING!!!> I managed to complete 9BWAS on JT65...  8)  (Might have been some help from a chat board.)

And then yes... and yes. Beautiful sounding, but I compared it to watching paint dry. FT8 is by far much more efficient. JT65 never quite caught on with DXing I think because it could not beat CW. Whereas FT8... well, I just ate and don't need any rotten tomatoes thrown at me. And yes, I am still a CW guy... my Kent single paddle is right here on the desk next to the radio!  ;D

I remember it very well. It will go down to like -30. Very good mode for EXTREMELY weak signals. Almost like using ESP :)  Sure sucked to listen to it though. To the untrained ear it sounds like dead carrier. It does warble a bit, but at first listen you won't notice it. Another great mode that bit the dust, because of so many hams died before the QSO was finished.  :)

Yeah, I remember getting out a magnifying glass to look at the waterfall to see if a JT9 signal was there, and half the time even if you could really see one, or imagined that you saw one, they would decode.
