Parts swapping HI HI HI
« on: March 15, 2023, 10:45:14 AM »

Lets all buy some radios today and swap out the good parts for the bad!  All hams do this-I know because most for sale ads say that all hams do this.

I guess the knife cuts both ways. But, we shouldn't paint with broad strokes.

My only concern is with valve radios and amps. At several hundred to thousands of dollars for tubes I'd rather just not get involved unless from a friend or "see it working".

Sadly, the good suffer for the bad as in most things.

First licensed in 1965, I've been "ripped off" only twice in all those years by hams...statistically speaking, not worth worrying about. And I don't buy anything over $100 - $200.... Ham radio just mirrors society in general and there will always less than honest folks among us. Heck, I have relatives I wouldn't buy from or let in the house...HI HI. And I will always accept returns if someone's not happy with what I sold them which has never happened.

Just my 2 cents.

Now craigslist is another story and I prefer to never ever list anything on that site, but I have done so - I could tell you stories.....

Now that is how a ham seller should be.  I would buy from you.  I will never buy from a "no returns due to parts swapping."

Well, so much for HRO. I went in there and said I wanted a radio for the XYL. He said sorry, we don't take trades.... ;D

Been a ham for almost 50 years and have never been ripped off because you need to pay attention to those red flags. Now, would I ever purchase anything from someone with disclaimers such as no returns due to parts swappers. no. Will I ever purchase anything form someone who claims that it worked fine last time he used it, no. Will, I purchase something from someone who claims that his uncle used it and it worked fine before he died, no. Will I ever purchase anything from anyone who stated that I came form a estate sale but he has not tested it, no. Will, I believe anyone who is selling a year old or 20 year old equipment that he claims is brand new and only took it out of the box to take the picture, no.  These guys believe in PT Barnum phrase that there's a sucker born every minute. Unless is a bonafide business with written return policies, you buy it, you own it.

What makes me a little crazy are the sellers who take a perfectly good radio and part it out because they can get more money for the individual boards.

I have been looking for a Harris RF110A for years, all I ever find are pieces and parts.

I do not want to be forced to listen to "One Piece at a Time" by Johnny Cash, as I reassemble an RF-110A

There are two outfits - one in Canada (Toronto Surplus, IIRC) and another in VA - which had/have the entire A series Harris ensemble listed. Receiver, exciter and amp came in at ~$8500 plus shipping, or you can buy the individual equipment plus service spares.

I have often thought about picking a complete package up but there are enough premium receivers in my collection to keep me amused for the foreseeable future.

One piece at a time and it didn’t cost me a dime.

Buying a radio one piece at a time keeps it off the XYL's radar.  Why do you think Elecraft sold the K3 in that fashion?

if you need to buy a radio one piece at a time, sneak a radio into the house, lie about how much you paid for a radio, or any of the other excuses that many hams need for XYL approval, then you have far bigger issues than ham radio.

Toronto Surplus has a Harris RF-110A with a RF-124 power supply for 6K.

Or go here if you want one piece at a time.
