Almost Honor Roll; which one is next?
« on: March 16, 2023, 06:29:06 PM »

With my confirmation of 3Y0J I am now at 340 confirmed; only need ONE more for Honor Roll. Which one do you think it will be?

Spratly; BS7H;BV8P;CE0X;FR/G;P5;PY0T;S2;VK9X;ZS8

I think it will have to be either S2 or VK9X. I know there have been SSB operations from S2 and VK9X "recently", but I only do CW. I think the others will not happen in years (maybe CE0X or PY0T, not sure why there are so rare to operate).

I got lucky one night in 1984 tuning around on 40 meter SSB and there was CE0AA, running a list. He had a good signal and was easy to work.

The call CE0AA had been used previously from Easter Island so I thought how cool, Easter Island on 40 SSB.

When I got the QSL card I discovered I had actually worked the San Felix DXPedition.

It was one of those "right place, right time" situations.

Good luck on your last one for HR.

Just looking from the last 10 years..

S2 seems to have an activation once every couple of years (I think a group was there this year?). ZS8 once in a while a ham/scientist goes and will put it on the air. VK9X I don't think has had an activation in a while... the only one I worked was in 2014. I don't recall if they have been back on the air since then. PY0T hasn't been on in a while either. Hopefully at least one or more of those will come on the air in the next couple of years.

but I only do CW.

Congratulations on being a CW enthusiast. I wholeheartedly salute you Paul...............I'm 99% sure it will be Bangladesh which pushes you over the top................Probably both award wise & psychologically.  :)

I will be thinking of you the next time I see a S2 spotted on the cluster.

I'm sure you mean you are at 330, as 340 would have you top of HR,

S2 or VK9X should be doable rest will need a miracle

Yes, 330 and not 340. DOH.

I disagree Tom, I think it will be VK9X. There have been quite a few activations for CQWW SSB for VK9X in recent years and they say nothing about pre-post contest activity. Also a group goes to S2 every other year or so and they state up-front they are SSB and digital only and I have never seen a spot to contradict that.

I do remember talk about a CE0X operation recently but that seems to have fizzled out.

I am only 60 years old; I probably have 15 years left to get this done.

LET'S GO TOM!!!!

VK9X and S2 are up regularly. Both are very difficult paths, with Christmas I. having a directly polar path for you. But if an operation to VK9X is on the beach they'll put in a good signal to NA-East if propagation is decent. It's close to Cocos-Keeling, which is another one that's never easy from Zone 5.

S2 is never easy. Power limits (either 100W or 400W, I forget which), and I'm pretty sure S2 operations are always well inland, never close to the extensive mud flat that is the Bangladeshi coastline. From what I recall reading, that's not a safe place to be in terms of environmental pollutants from the shipbreaking activities for which it's famous as well as from other human factors.  In 22 years I've only worked each of those entities about 15 times, and never on 40 or below. If someone goes there then 10, 12, and 15 will be your friends.

Trindade is due for an activation soon. They usually come up every 5-6 years; 2002, 2009, 2015, with a very short operation in 2011. I don't think anybody's been back since PQ0T in 2015. If someone does go there it will be an easy shot from NA and you should be able to work it at least once. Of the rest? Glorioso would be the next most likely if someone can make a breakthrough with TAAF. I don't think FR/g has been active since Sept. 2009. I need that one on 5 bands plus digital so I'm really hopeful. As for the others? Oink oink flap flap. Not in this lifetime, I'm afraid.

Great times are at hand, and soon there will be DX for all—although more for some than for others.

I would guess Spratleys would be a possibility.  They seem to get activated fairly regularly, although tensions in that area of the world have increased recently, but it seems that many of the expeditions are licensed through Malaysia and using a 9M prefix.

I seem to remember seeing that there was a DXpedition scheduled for their soon using the DX0 prefix but it isn't on the NG3K ADXO page right now.

UPDATE:  Here is it

The DX0NE group was on track to activate Spratly last year but decided to postpone it. Their license has been renewed by the DU authorities and they are looking to do it this year however the South China Sea is the scene of a lot of political maneuvering now so we'll just have to see what develops.

Huh? Give yourself more time than that, you look like a healthy young man in your photo. By that logic, I would have been out of DXing two years ago. Either the grand reaper would have told me it's checkout time, or I would be so senile I wouldn't know what a radio is. My memory may not be very sharp anymore, but give the the propagation and I can still work sum gud DX.

BTW: That's some beautiful vintage gear in your arsenal, great job with the restorations.

PY0/T I am fairly certain has a military base, Navy. My qsl from there has a photo of a Brazilian submarine.

Yep, IIRC there are always a handful of people stationed there, although more for research than anything else. However it is under administration of the Brazilian Navy. I recall that prior to the Nov. 2012 activation of St. Peter and Paul Rocks, the Navy stated in no uncertain terms that PT0S would be the last-ever approved operation from those rocks, so I'm not certain where that leaves Trindade or Martim Vaz.

I've lived life pretty hard; if I make it to 75 I will be happy.
