I've seen that guy at Dayton/Xenia. Usually, he's also wearing a yellow hard hat with a miniature tower, and a 3 element beam with a blinking red light on top. I think he lives in a HOA ::).

Doesn't look like this guy, but I remember seeing a young lady at Dayton who used hair gel to put her fairly long hair into a pointed "up do", and at the pointed top, she install an antenna. Talked with her a couple of times and she had a great sense of humor.

PS - the guy with the yellow hard hat also had a BNC connector in the top of the hat. It had a cable that ran down to his belt. The BNC was for an HT antenna that connected to an HT on his belt. Might have been a different guy though. But if you go to hamvention, eventually you'll see lots of odd things.

I've seen a couple of these POTA stations in operation. In many cases, the operators seem to be oblivious to the fact that most people go to parks to get some peace and quiet. Typical installations include guy ropes and long feed lines strung across walkways, and the radio volume cranked way up so everyone in the area can share in the "excitement" of ham radio.

The POTA ops themselves are a riot to listen to. On the local repeater, they love using military terminology with an almost whacker-like zeal as they talk about "ACTIVATING" a POTA site and "DEPLOYING"..

Although I think the original POTA idea may have been a desire by the ARRL to trick hams into getting out of their shacks and outside into the sun for a change, in reality it just makes people who go to the parks to enjoy the outdoors stay away.

Don't know how my comment on the POTA thing got into this thread. I must have accidentally jumped threads somewhere along the line between reading, logging in, and replying. Sorry for the distraction :(
