3Y0J I missed them
« on: March 17, 2023, 05:17:00 PM »

It seems the week they actually came into the States. I was on a tropical isle. I thought they would be operating longer. I read the thread. It sure seems like a lot of bad luck. Maybe better luck next time for a mobile QSO. I guess I have to get FT8 equipped ? I hope I don't run out of time at age 74 now.

Sorry to hear you missed them.
According to the m0oxo.com page 63% of their contacts were on CW.
I was lucky enough to get them on 30 CW running 200W to a dipole at 30 feet.

When a station like 3Y0J is operating, a dedication shows up. Cancel all trips and sleeping until the new one is worked. Or at least buy into a remote radio network like remotehams and try working them afar. Then it should be faster with high power and high beams but it may costs something at $0.99 a minute.

I worked them on 30m at 3 AM local time; too much jamming earlier. I did not not cancel my trip during the KH/Kure Dxpedition, no activities since and now little chance of #1 Honor Roll.

Set your goals to what is achievable.

A lot of very excellent hams never make #1 Honor Roll.  That takes a lot of things falling into place that just doesn't happen for everyone.

I was doing dumb stuff like looking for work and moving while Glorioso was on.  A lot of us have stories like that, about the one that got away because of travel, work, even illness.  If you aren't able to be at the rig for maybe 10 or 20 selected weeks of your life, and I mean every one of those weeks, not just most of them, you probably miss out.  OK, that's life.  What's next?

Reset your sights.  Try "mere" Honor Roll.  DXCC 2000.  5BWAZ.  There's plenty to do that doesn't require one to be chained to the rig for life and still have "something happen" and you miss it.

In fact, set your sights on the immediate next goal.  If that is 5BDXCC, then work it.  Not everyone does, you know.  Put one achievable accomplishment after another and the total you will amass might well still be more than you might now expect.  There is always room for positive surprises as well as the negative ones.

Sorry you missed Bouvet. Quite honestly, I doubt there will be another DX'pedition to that God forsaken place for quite sometime. Too expensive, too dangerous, and it's too unforgiving. Of course, if you have crazies like the Rebel DX group, you never know what can happen :)

I trust you are being facetious here about working via a remote station.

It’s not about what you win but how you win.

I not only missed them, I never even heard them!  Listened on CW and FT8 with no copy here at all.  Didn't even copy the pirates most times.

I hope Dom does go there-I usually have pretty good luck working him and his team.

After VK6CQ (VKØLD, VP8PJ) says he took out all future DXpeditions to Bouvet and Peter I Island, you have a better chance at winning the Mega-Millions Lottery.

He even told the Rebels "don't waste anymore of your time and $$$ on it" - as he's so sure he got future DXpeditions to either Entity cancelled.

Sorry that you missed them. Dom still plans to take a group there at some point so perhaps a little bit down the road you'll have another chance to get them in the log.

I wish I were more active in the later 90's / earlier 2000's but I was largely living in apartments so I was mostly off the air but I missed some top 20's (I wasn't too much into dxing back then as I am now). I did try for Glorioso when I was getting more into radio but at the time I only had an indoor antenna while I still lived in an apartment so... yeah.

Will I ever reach top of the honor roll? Who knows. I'll be happy if I make honor roll but I still have 10 to go for that. At 48, almost 49.... there's definitely hope. It won't be easy from where I'm living now as I have a large hill that blocks much of my signal to SE Asia, but once we head for retirement there will be a bit of HFTA analysis of property/house 2.0 for better radio performance (and dark sky analysis for better night time stargazing).

The thrill of the chase is always fun..

Long path on 40m in the early US evening should be your friend.

From here, I work VUs all the time that way and it is nearly antipodes for me.

Even if you have a mere vertical, LP (how would you know?) could still be your friend.

Especially near the equinoxes, you probably have just enough common darkness to pull it off. If not, figure out what times of year that you do.

Oh, I didn't have any trouble copying and working the pirates. I have the screen shots to prove it. :(

It now looks like I only decoded them while they were on the wrong time slot. I did not pursue it because I thought it was a pirate trying to cause havoc.

No certainty I would have worked them anyways, but a lesson that I should have known better: WFWL

I remember reading he committed suicide (at 54).  They "hushed" that up for quite awhile, said he died from a "long term illness".  Turned out later it was self-inflicted stab wounds.

Man, that guy was accomplished:  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_E._Brady_Jr.
