TH-8600 Programming problem
« on: March 18, 2023, 10:33:12 AM »

I have a new TH-8600 2 meter, 70 cm transceiver that programmed just fine a couple of months ago.  Using the same Windows 7, Dell laptop used to previously program it, I tried adding some more repeater frequencies to it a few days ago but now get a "Connect TimeOut,Please Check Comport!" message.  The comport is recognized okay but I can't read from or write to the radio due to this message.  I've checked that the comport and baud rate are correct between the radio and software, and the comport driver is current.  I'm at my wits end as to what else to try.  Anyone with one of these units have any ideas about this timeout message?  Thanks....

This type of message is frequently an indication that the COM port numbers are not matched between the operating system and the software. Windows will often change the COM port number when you reconnect the USB cable.

I believe you also need to press the A/B, lock and power switches on the radio to make it enter the programming mode.

The message indicates that some other application is now using the com port.  Time to manually assign it back or shut the other application.

Thanks to each of you, Glen and Mike, for your suggestions.  I had previously checked the com port and found that COM10, the one the software showed to use, said "in use by another program" even tho the radio's software was the only program that was in use.  The message occurred no matter what other port I tried to use.  I even reset them to show they were 'available' and things still didn't work.  Trying the 'multiple button' combination didn't do anything for me either, Glenn, but I did find a video late last night about a computer programmed radio that was an HT.  He showed the programming cord to his computer first then to the radio.  So, I tried that this morning and the software did it's thing like there had never been a problem.  I even powered off everything for a few minutes, left things connected, brought them back up and added more repeater frequencies to the list as a test.  I hit SEND and it all worked as advertised.  Maybe a gremlin got in there when I launched the program last week but it's working now the way I remember.  So, Guys, thanks very much for helping... it's been a long few days!!
