DXCC Band Slot help request
« on: April 01, 2023, 10:48:44 AM »

Anyone have any tips for me to get that last 80m entity/country worked and LoTW confirmed?

I am in Indiana and my 100 watts and multiband wire antenna are not ideal but they have gotten me this far.  I have over 125 LoTW confirmed on 10/12/15/17/20/30/40m and Sable Island will be #99 on 80m for me when my recent CW contact gets LoTW confirmed... (8BDXCC)

I am not looking for digital mode countries or confirmations...

Two countries that jump out at me as very gettable are Chile and Finland, yet i have not encountered them on 80m yet...   here are the countries i have LoTW confirmed for 80m. if you know of a station / country i need that is on air lately and isn't that hard to hear, please let me know:

A contest is going to be the best best to catch activity on 80m, if you are going to insist on no Digi modes then you maybe keep watching the Reverse beacon network for entities you need and try to work someone who does LoTW,

If you use Clublog they have a built in DX cluster that allows you to filter by needed band slots and by using that you can see who is active and when so you can try to catch them,

GL in the last few they are always the hardest, took me years to close out 6m I was 4 years going from around 95 to getting over the line, this was before FT8 and even the JT modes now most people do 6m DXCC is one summer season,

Get on in the wee hours of the morning for European sunrise.  There is a propagation peak at that time with plenty of activity.
Noise level at your end is minimal.  Almost no competition from fellow stateside stations.
Tune around for stations if you are serious about CW DXCC.  RBN doesn't pick up hand sent CW.  Not everyone has a keyer.

The days before a contest can be better than the contest itself, as stations test out their stuff to make sure it works before the big event.

Download DX Lab by AA6YQ. The program will give an audible announcement whenever something is spotted that you need. It's free, has it's own support group, what more can anyone ask... http://dxlabsuite.com/

Also try deep into the pacific right around your own local sunrise. Set up alerts in Hamalert for the entities and modes you want and get ready to jump out of bed and head into the shack at a moment's notice. Even with 289 confirmed on 80m I still do that a few times a year.

Great times are at hand, and soon there will be DX for all—although more for some than for others.

Cuba is extremely active on all bands and modes and is basically no different than working Florida on 80.

As suggested, contesting is probably the way to go given you are roughly at the 100 mark.

Remember that the T4 prefix is also sometimes issued for Cuba, especially for contests like WPX.

Aruba and Curacao are also good bets and both are activated for just about every contest.  Really, anything in the Caribbean you don't have is a good bet and doesn't require you being active at 2AM.

He has already worked all of those countries that you just mentioned. The list he posted was countries he had already worked, not ones that he still needs.

It's very hard to look at a list like that and expect someone to list a country that would be easy to work,

Go to clublog and look for the low hanging fruit, basically look at your needed entities on 80m and start at the least most wanted and see what is active,

To get the list on the home page click Timelines on the left then needed entities on the bar in the center then filter by band and away you go,

If you are not a registered user of Clublog, You need to register and upload your log there to use all the tools on there to help you work DX,

For me these are my 10 least wanted entities on 80m, and I don't do much 80m so that is why these are all pretty common places,

TI   COSTA RICA   255
OD   LEBANON   256
TK   CORSICA   257
HZ   SAUDI ARABIA   259
KH6   HAWAII   265
A4   OMAN   266
HL   REPUBLIC OF KOREA   270
CX   URUGUAY   277
CE   CHILE   279
ZS   REPUBLIC OF SOUTH AFRICA   286

This site shows upcoming DXpeditions... I find it helpful to know what's coming up:

https://www.ng3k.com/misc/adxo.html

I see Market Reef or St. Pierre & Miquelon in there which are not in your list. I'd think those might be good possibilities. I didn't pick through your European / middle Eastern entities worked but maybe there are a few more to look out for... Belarus.. Estonia... two come to mind I don't see.. but look for those and others.

look around for Iceland, there are several hams pretty active from there.

Check out hamalert.org and create a trigger for 80m and put in entities you haven't worked you think are pretty active that you might be able to (look for stuff in SA, Carribbean, AS-Pacific, EU, etc). Depending on how you have the filters setup - you can get an alert on your phone (using their app) that could tell you that country was heard from even as close as your own state.

Good luck!! You're just about there!

I sure could use PJ5 on 6m.  I have 96 on 6m.    Afternoons/evenings there have been openings from NA to SA.

Hi,
So could a LOT of others. The most common request I get is for 6m.  I watch DXMaps and when it shows 6m is open I jump over there. Most times when 6m is open down here it is to SA or AF, but things have been looking better for NA.

Listen for my V47JA 6m Beacon on St. Kitts, it is only 11 miles away, and at 1100 feet ASL so you would hear it on St Kitts before you would hear me on St Eustatius.

6m would be awesome but a it's a little early yet (unless we get lucky).

Been trying for you on 15m but no luck yet here.. it's the only other band I need PJ5 other than 6m. You've had a monster signal in here but many callers.

ST.  Kitts would be a new one on 6 for me as well.   Hope to get you at both locations.

Somebody suggested he set his sights on Cuba.  His list says he has worked Cuba.
