I just want to say thank you to the members of this forum
« on: March 26, 2023, 11:06:43 AM »

I am also a participant/member of another well known amateur radio forum which shall remain nameless to protect the innocent...but it might start with a Q and end with a Z....but that could be anyone on the internet.

Anyway, I just want to say thank you to the members here for their courtesy, decorum, and willingness to help out other hams by answering questions without being judgemental or condescending.

I've observed a lot of cranky old Fudds with superiority attitudes on the un-named site that must have been abused as children because they seem to take joy in belittling anyone who asks a question obviously because they know everything and back in the day they had to walk to school barefoot in the snow uphill both ways.  Not everyone on that other site are like that, but there are enough...actually too many that are. Case in point is one particular thread that currently is 62 pages long where they are venting their spleens over "No code Extras".  I know a lot of you are probably members or at least visitors on the un-named site so I'm sure you've seen it too.

So again thank you to everyone here for being so helpful, for teaching, mentoring and guiding other members, for being so courteous and for showing what the best of Amateur Radio is about and not being cranky old Fudds. I really enjoy hanging out here with all of you.

If I've ever helped you then you are welcome but how do you know how old they are? A lot of trolls are young.. a lot of condescending people are introverts convinced of their superiority with low social skills...

I've looked up a lot of them by call number, they're older than me and I'm an old Fudd so that makes them cranky old Fudds!  Here's a photo of me, if you see me around say hello!

I too have been helped by form members, and I offer my help when I can. I have gained a lot of knowledge from reading postings here. A great resource for anyone.

Why are you so scared to say QRZ.com? Are you frightened of your own shadow as well?

Those old timers who have this 'no code" attitude really tick me off, so I had to go to Zed to say my piece!
Many of the bad attitude Hams don't even have an Extra, yet they like to assert their perceived superiority.
It's a real turn off to new radio club prospects...just sayin'.

Lots of good and bad here, at QRZ, and elsewhere. That said, I struggle to understand why folks who take issue with being generalized about then turn around and generalize about others. I don't have a dog in the fight, other than being an older, longtime amateur radio operator who welcomes most newcomers to the amateur life. I just don't understand the denigration of others in response to feeling denigrated. It seems to be the old pot calling the kettle black. "Do not ascribe to your fellow man your own blemish".  Just food for thought.

Asking them to point you in the direction of a VE testing sight that still requires a code test usually shuts them up.

Some good words of wisdom, a few posts back, but  I am surprised by some the technical back ground of members on this forum, Last week there was a post about sw radios is cars,  the trivia, the american cars from the 50's that could have an optional radio.
There was even a link that showed the advertising of these optional radios, quite interesting stuff. So many users with varied interests.

... VE testing ...

What?  You don’t have to finagle a weekday off from school and
have someone drive you 90 miles so you can cringe in the glare
of a steely-eyed FCC examiner while taking the exam?

What is this hobby coming to...    ;)

Besides, it was only 60 miles.  But never let the facts get in
the way of a good story.

And why is “323A Customhouse, 555 Battery Street” forever
etched in my memory, decades later?

Hmmm... from Aurora Missouri to The federal building at 601 East 12th St., Kansas City, MO  is around 189 miles. And after all of these decades I can still remember her name.  Etta Birdsong.  "PENCILS DOWN!" screamed at the top of her lungs the second the last character from the code machine was still reverberating around the room.  Yeah, talk about steely eyed. Uh, Huh.  These are the memories of a 16 year old farm boy from Aurora Mo. that wanted an Amateur Radio license.
