Can anyone tell me the best / safest way to connect the 718 to the Centurion. Finals blew on my Orion II - so I need to use the 718 as backup for a while.

I have to assume you have the manual for the 718. If you don't, download it from Icom. You shouldn't need it, but there is a pictorial in the manual which might make more sense.

If you have concerns about the timing delay and the possibility of hot-switching, the safest way is to use an external keyer. Connect the keyer output to the Key-In of the Centurion, and run a line from the KEY-OUT on the Centurion to the rig key jack. Thi sway, the amp is always in transmit before the rig puts out any RF.
