I believe that this explains what happened...

Solar-terrestrial indices for 17 April follow.
Solar flux 194 and mid-latitude A-index 31.
The mid-latitude K-index at 1200 UTC on 18 April was 5 (79 nT).

Space weather for the past 24 hours has been strong.
Geomagnetic storms reaching the G3 level occurred.
Solar radiation storms reaching the S1 level occurred.
Radio blackouts reaching the R1 level occurred.

I really like Steve's answer and it has the same putity & clarity as the original posting.  It is gratifying to see such clear postings.

And I just found out that hitting "cancel" does not stop the posting. So now I have three postings (count this one) when I needed only one. Ignore the first one (the one that says "putity" instead of "purity") . Geez, I really need to get up later in the mornings.
