I made up a short patch cable using RG8X (RG58 would also be fine), with a PL259 on one end, and a Radio Shack metal RCA male plug on other end.  Works fine.

I just noticed that www.radioworks.com has a UHF to RCA adapter for $1.39.  Their number #904.    John

It's a common adapter.  But it is often referred to as a UHF-to-Motorola adapter.  It has a longer shank, so will work in either a phono (RCA) female or a Motorola (as used on car radio antennas) female jack.  I use the same adapter in both situations.

The cable works fine, though.

In my opinion, you should not use an adaptor.  These RCA jacks were never made to support the weight and leverage of a big, heavy adaptor, plus the weight of a PL-259, plus whatever kind of coax is added.

I think you should make up a short cable, one end directly to RCA male, and the other end to probably a UHF.

In case you are young enough, Radio shack does not sell "real" RCA plugs.  They are terrible, awful, quality, and some they sell don't even have hollow centers.

"IF"  you can find a "real" plug, that's the way to go.

(Might just try a two way shop)

Depending on the size of the RCA receptacle, sometimes you can direct-substitute a BNC receptacle which is a much better connector. (If the hole needs to be a little larger, bore the hole with a Unabit and shield the wiring from shavings with a large cloth.)

There are SO-239 to BNC adapters available or use an RG-58/U jumper with a PL-259 on one end, BNC on the other.
