TH-D7A(g) Help - Resetting on me.
« on: November 19, 2001, 05:12:29 PM »

Hello,

I'm looking at a used TH-D7A(g) to get up and running on APRS and am running into a problem. I want to use the HT as a dual mobile/home station but when the supplied power adapter is being used the unit resets when PTT is activated. I've never seen any other HT do this that I've owned (only owned Yaesu before). Basically my question is this:

Can this unit transmit with the wall charger in use?

I know the unit uses more amps than the wall charger can supply during high-power transmit, but it would seem that the attached battery should be enough to handle the load and the wall charger keeps trickle charging. Am I missing something with the Kenwood? Do I need to send this thing back? I would rather use the wall charger than a 12V source if I can.

Thanks,

-- Craig

Nope. Sorry.

The supplied charger doesn't have the amps to
support TX even if the battery is fully-charged.
Kenwood makes a drop-in charger that will work.

I have mine hooked up to a 12-volt supply. In
the end, that was not much more expensive than
getting the drop-in charger and gave me a bit
more flexibility.

The wall charger doesn't work -- I had a similar experience.

However, the drop-in charger rocks.  You can use it to use the radio as a packet station, and you can also use it to charge batteries while you're walking around with your HT.  I have two Kenwood drop-in chargers for two different models, and I'm very pleased with both.
