Tempo One dial backlash
« on: February 02, 2001, 09:53:25 PM »

I have been working on a Henry Tempo One HF rig. The tuning has an annoying backlash. I have downloaded the Tempo One information from bama.sbc.edu. Page 06.gif describes the problem and condition six seems to be a good explanation of the trouble. However, I have the set screws tight against the felt and there is still the same amount of dial backlash. The problem seems to be in the linkage of two concentric dial shafts. Does anyone have thoughts on this situation?

Thanks, Fred Merker   K3TAZ

Fred,

Could the tuning capacitor be tight due to dried-out grease?

This problem has been resolved. The Tempo has a ball bearing assembly that passes rotational motion from the dial shaft to the VFO gears. There was lubrication in the ball bearing race that caused the slipping. Getting to the the ball bearings requires the VFO to be removed from the radio. The assembly is held together with metal fold over tabs. Too much flexing here will destroy the assembly.
