TAPE DIPOLE?
« on: February 14, 2002, 01:03:28 PM »

Hello:

Does any company currently produce an
HF "tape dipole", i.e. a portable antenna
with two spools of steel tape that can
be reeled in/out for the different HF bands?

Years ago, Hy-Gain made the HA-4000 unit
(which Collins sold as the TD-1), and they
also made a cheaper 18TD model.

The spools were contained in a center
plastic housing that also contained the
coax connector, a balun, and a large eyelet
to hang the assembly with.

These were excellent designs (long since out
of production) for portable HF use, but
apparently no company has since picked up on
the concept to currently make something
similar...?

The next best thing may be the SH Electronics PRA2.

This uses 134 ft. of uninsulated AWG24 tin plated wire, 24 strands of .035", stainless steel hardware and plastic case on two reels, with wire labelled at 8 points to cover 80 through 6 meters, 100w max., uses either coax or balanced line.  The uninsulated wire shorts when taken up inside the reel so that it doesn't act as an inductor and is secured at the adjustment by 6-32 wing nuts on each side.  Look it over at www.radiobugs.com  I have not used one yet, but have ordered one for my "go kit" and evaluation purposes.

Uses wire on reels, not a tape measure, but it's the same idea.  Each leg is 40 ft. & is connected to a very short length of coax w/PL-259 on end.  I've not used one.
