Good Evening All,

I am a member of my local ARES group here in the Denver, CO metro area. We are getting our packet stations setup for use, and have seen several different types of software for use with the TNC's.

What I would like to do for the group is to create a software package, if you will, custom for our group. I'm not having a lot of luck when it comes to locating any open source that I might be able to use. I'm most certainly not a professional programmer, more of a hobbiest then anything. But was wondering if anyone might know of some links to some source code for tnc software?

Just trying to spark more interest in the group towards packet. My EOC asked me to review some of the software that is out and available for use, but our county communications center said that the software either has to be registered to them, the IT guy said to use Hyper-term, works but not robust enough.
The other software available seems to not really fit the bill, Would like to present something that could be used for the group and not have to concern anyone about licensing issues, and have something that the entire group could use and that could be expanded upon later as needs develope later.

Links would be great, so would input.

Thanks in advance,

Have you looked at Airmail 2000?  (http://www.airmail2000.com)

Airmail has VHF packet capability now, and support for a bunch of different TNCs.

A description of what we use in Virginia is on the Virginia Digital Emergency Network (VDEN) page in the links section under Emergency and Special Services. 73

Ed KE4SKY,
I just looked on E-Ham links and there are 5832 links here and I did NOT find the subheading of emergency and special services.

KC0NVI,
There is a group in Utah that wrote a packet software package for ARES. The drawback is that it is DOS. You can find it at:
http://www.ucares.org/modules.php?op=modload&name=UpDownload&file=index&req=viewsdownload&sid=1
I know this is a long line, you can go to:
http://www.ucares.org/
and go to the downloads section for the program, it is called ARESpack 3.0.

Good luck,
Tom

I believe the URL that Ed was referring to is http://users.erols.com/sagers/, which appears to be the home page for VDEN's VHF & UHF packet networks.

If you are using Windoze, there might be a solution.  Most TNC's will operate with terminal software, and that's already built into the operating system.

But unless all the equipment is the same, including the TNC's, there's no simple "Plug and Play" solution, each station will have to be configured differently.

One other thing to consider is licensing.  You can't buy just one copy of a commercial program and (legally) use it on more than one computer.   So I'd be looking for free-ware (or share-ware) programs.  (You might even be able to make a deal with a share-ware author such that for a fixed fee you can have as many copies as necessary.

Hi Randy,
Sorry, I guess I didn't read your post closely enough the first time through; you seem to have thought of most everything already.  You might want to take another look at Hyperterm; at least it's built in.

You could also look at http://www.qsl.net/aresco/
for packet software there.

KD0RC built some very good software that will operate under DOS (older versions) or Windows.

It pre-formats messages, supports alias', will work very well with a cluster but will also do point to point very nicely.

Which district are you in?

P.S. I have a direct link in my page at:

The use of packet with Emergency Management is not
a new concept. Several areas used it in the 90's.
There are several problems associated with packet
use under and in close proximity to generators.
RFI is often so bad that the packets cannot be
decoded. Also, many of the agencies involved in our
area use VHF/UHF and this became another source of
RFI.  In some cases RFI filters worked but in
others they did not. The use of packet was later
abandoned.
