Other than Pelican does anyone recommend another brand of radio case. Pelican is an excellent brand, but a little too expensive for infrequent ham radio ecom applications..

In the medium to almost small category is the "Protector" series from, of all places, Wal-Mart. It is 12x16x6 for $15. Includes the "egg carton" foam and a piece of the square cut out type of foam.

Not truely hard sides but close and the price is right for what you get (good value).

Agree with Pat, the Protector cases from Walmart are a good bang for the buck.  You can easily custom fit foam liners.  Military metal ammunition cans can also be foam lined for storing smaller equipment and are readily available.

I agree that unless you need the watertight seal, Pelikan Cases maybe more than you need or can afford. I will look into the Wal-Mart cases others have mentioned.

I have had some luck with the hard plastic, foam lined cases used for firearms made by Doskocil and sold  at sporting goods stores. The have several sizes and shapes, some of which can be very effective for ham radios. I also have seen some very fine hard-sided luggage and briefcases converted into radio cases. These are often available very cheap at yard sales or fleamarkets. Another alternative is the rackmount road cases that musicians use for audio gear. You install the equipment in the portable rack case and install front and rear removable covers. CQ VHF magazine's current issue shows some of these. A third alternative is to use plastic toolboxes.

you cannot beat a Pelican case! I have one that has been around the world and has yet to fail, another is dedicated to my portable HF station. I consider a solid, watertight, case to be a great investment to protect a rig that I do not use everyday.

I'm assuming the "Protector" series cases are buried somewhere in sporting goods at Wal-Mart - perhaps by the hunting supplies???

Also, anybody know where a guy can purchase just the "egg carton" foam?

Thanks and 73,

I got some from these folks, but search for "convoluted foam packing" and you'll get more hits.
