Los Angeles 50.500 fox hunting target-24 Hrs daily
« on: March 22, 2009, 12:16:46 PM »

For several years now there has been a mystery signal on 50.500 Mhz. It is strong (S-8) here in Santa Ana, Orange county. It is heard in the L.A., Orange and Riverside counties. It is exactly on 50.500 so it may not be a spur from a commercial or public service transmiter. There appears to be no modulation on it so it may not be a spur from a Broadcaster.

If it where indeed a spur from a Non-Ham transmitter it would perhaps not fall exactly on 50.500 Mhz. So it "May" be Ham related. Anyway, as unlawful as it may be, many of us do not consider it a nuisance. This signal has been used over the YEARS as a test and reference signal for measuring path loss, receiver alignment, etc. Nobody on the southern California Sunday morning 6M net (50.400 Amplitude mod 10a.m. local) knows where its from or what it is.

We would like to know:
1) Where and what is the antenna and TX?
2)Power (erp?)
3) Tx owner
4) Anything else

Thanks in advance

The 50.5 MHz signal went away when TV channel 2 finally went off the air last month.  CH2 was a "nightlight" station, so it didn't sign off on June 12.
