odball request for Shelby hamfest attender
« on: August 29, 2003, 02:10:28 PM »

I'm not a ham, but have a need for a particular bit of merchandise that will most likely be on sale at the Shelby Hamfest.

I'm coming into Shelby to visity my daughter at college (Ambassidor), and will be delivering to her some computer gear etc... In the etc is a digital camera that I just got, and happen to need some NiMH batteries and a rapid charger for it. I'm wanting to get a Maha MH-C401FS 100Min Cool Charger w/ 4 2200mAh AA Batteries, Car Adapter.

The supplier I tried locally in Atlanta (Ham Radio Outlet), as well as a Maha rep are sposed to be present this weekend.

The rub is that my time spent in the Shelby area will be as much as possible with my daughter, and I have no need or desire to wander about the grand daddy of all hamfests....

Why am I posting this? Anybody willing to assist me in acquiring said gear? I'd have gotten it from the mfg or an outlet if I could have by this weekend.

I was at the Shelby hamfest and did see several folks selling NiMH batteries but didn't pay attention to the chargers.  Sorry I didn't read this before going.

I have used 4 different chargers and for AA/AAA/9V have settled on the RayoVac 1 hour charger that you can buy at Walmart.  It charges NiMH & NiCd cells, is intelligent enough to correctly charge from various levels of discharge w/o cooking or overcharging and can be purchased with both power brick and car adapter plug.  I have used mine with AA batteries from 1600mAH to 2200mAH with great results.

A good place to order MAHA stuff if you want to go with them is from http://nimhbattery.com/ and they currently have a combo of the maha fast charger, 4 AA 2200mAH, wallwart and car plug for under $40.  I have my eye on some of the new 11,000mAH D cells too.

Note, I don't work at either place.

Well, I was at the so-called Shelby Hamfest. What I mostly saw was, illegal Citizens Band Radios (non FCC type accepted), Illegal Citizens Band Amplifiers, a bunch of old Public Service Radios, tons and tons on old computer junk, and a lot of “hams” who needed a bath. This “Hamfest”, and I use the term loosely, has turned into a joke. Oh yeah, and one dude, who must have been on crack, wanted $800.00 for an old KW TS-440S, with a small Astron power supply. I live within a 1 hour drive of Shelby, and this years trip, will be my last!

BTW, you haven’t seen anything yet! Wait until the Morse Code requirement is dropped. It’s only going to get better…… :)
