How about a "Western Version" of the Hamvention - perhaps at the Las Vegas Convention Center or one of the off the strip hotels ? Its been talked about in the past.

It's been tried in the past. It didn't work out.

Las Vegas was once the site of the annual SAROC ham convention, held the same time as the CES. SAROC went downhill over the years until it finally croaked.

Someone wanted to "build a better convention" and gave it a go for a couple of years there before giving up.

Santa Maria CA used to have a big yearly convention. It also fell apart after many years. The hams there are trying to get it reestablished after all these years.

Ham conventions cost money to organize and set up. It's a gamble as to whether it will even break even. Some conventions seem to be going on momentum alone (take the Arizona Convention Formerly Known as Fort Tuthill, for example).

I remember SAROC well...<sigh>.

I'm afraid the days of big hamventions may be fading fast and gone soon, unfortunately.

Even Softbank, a large Japanese conglomerate, seemingly can't keep COMDEX going, and COMDEX is fading very quickly -- probably will be gone completely in another year or two.
