Wiring a speaker is no problem: two wires to the speaker terminals and a
plug on the other end to connect to the radio. The speaker case will
have a great effect on the audio fidelity of the speaker, especially at the
low end of the spectrum - check out the hi-fi books and magazines for
more info. (Actually, a speaker from an old stereo can usually be pressed
into service, although you may actually want a limited audio range to
eliminate unwanted hiss or rumble. Some hams try using stereo
headphones and complain that they respond to too many noises.)
I'm using several of the inexpensive plastic-cased mobile speakers, for
my base station and in both cars, and they seem adequate.
