Making a Speaker

Does anyone have any suggestions on making a speaker to attach to my rig?
It seems it should be as simple as using an off the shelf speaker (like you get at Radio Shack, etc.) and connecting it to the audio output on the back of my rig.
I plan to make a box to mount the speaker in.  I can handle minor electronic assembly if anyone suggests instructions for a simple circuit that might need to be added.
Any suggestions, experiences, opinions on type of speaker, or alternatives (maybe something not too expensive that is already made?)

Thanks in advance for your experience and expertise.

Wiring a speaker is no problem:  two wires to the speaker terminals and a
plug on the other end to connect to the radio.  The speaker case will
have a great effect on the audio fidelity of the speaker, especially at the
low end of the spectrum - check out the hi-fi books and magazines for
more info.  (Actually, a speaker from an old stereo can usually be pressed
into service, although you may actually want a limited audio range to
eliminate unwanted hiss or rumble.  Some hams try using stereo
headphones and complain that they respond to too many noises.)

I'm using several of the inexpensive plastic-cased mobile speakers, for
my base station and in both cars, and they seem adequate.

Now if you have the room  I suggest a 10" musical instrument speaker.(i use one) The response is excellent, the static is very manageable, and the tone is pleasent.
Most home entertainment speakers have tweeters in them, DONT USE THEM.  They actually amplify the static and gives you a headache!
For more flexability, you may want to make a tone switch for it to reduce the highs for those wicked summer nights.
have fun

How about buying a speaker. They are available thru most ham outlets and hamfests from as cheap as $3.50 up to $150.00.
