Ten-Tec SWL Kits

This is not exactly homebrew material. Just wondering if anyone is building and using Ten-Tecs regenerative shortwave receiver kits? I might try one as a weekend project.

hi,

QST (ARRL Publication) ran a story a few months
ago about one of these kits.

I am in the process of building one right now.  I bought it as a father/son project to do with my 10 year old.

Looks like a great kit . . . only complain is that it is so small!  Not much of a complaint.  We have it together and I fixed up my son's cold solder joints on the audio amplifier, but am still not getting any radio signals.  I need to take a closer look at our work on the RF part.

I think the kit is great, perhaps a bit overpriced at $24 without a case.  I plan on building a case just to give it more of a home made feel.  I think MJF sells a similar kit with a case for $30.

I'll post again once I have time to find the problem with my son's soldering.

An update with correction:

I found my bad solder joint last night and the receiver works great!

You will definitely need to package the kit into a metal box, wether it is homemade or you buy the Ten-Tec box and knob kit.

I double checked on the MFJ price and they are MORE expensive than Ten-Tec.  SOrry if I mislead anyone.

A while back I started a radio kits mailing list. Not very active, but you might find some interesting stuff in the links section--there are a lot more kits available than I thought...

It's at:
