$365mmf variable$ ... Pricy??
« on: February 27, 2003, 12:50:57 PM »

Was checking out dan's parts on the net.  He wants $25 for a two gang 365pf air variable.  Does this seem a tad high to anyone?

I don't have an ongoing project that might use one of these, was just curious.

I suppose this is motivation to get out to those neighborhood tag/garage sales.

Or perhaps using a tuning diode may be the answer

Such capacitors are almost impossible to find new.

They often show up at ham fests, etc., but rarely in
a quantity that are worthwhile for a commercial vendor
to list in a catalog.  Better to find your own at a
swap meet or an old tube radio from a thrift shop
(though tube radios are even becoming collectables.)

It depends.  A dual 365 is not a usual configuration; most BC radios used a single section 365 uuF variable.  The other consideration is the plate spacing; it may have been designed for transmitter use, with wide (high voltage rating) spacing, and not your regular receiving type variable.  If you are looking for a single section  variable or a low voltage variable, I'd keep looking.

No, not really looking for anything in particular.  Was considering building a RF generator in order to tune up my main receiver - HQ170A

A real nice National Radio vernier just went for about 35 bucks on ebay.  I figured the money I spent on vernier and varicaps and time just wasn't worth the effort.  By the time I'm done I'm into it for a hundred bucks and fourty hours labor.

I'm thinking time would be better spent building a receiver to replace the HQ.

Bidding on a nice one on ebay.

regards,
Bob

Midnight Science, a great resource for crystal radio enthusiasts, was selling single and dual gang ones for $11 and $22 respectively.

Not cheap, but if you have to complain then you need to develop your old-radio scavenging resources. I have a few old air-variables I am saving for special occasions. (Right now they are in a low-power transmatch.)

You might try www.orenelliotproducts.com, these guys have quite a few designs available.  I just picked up two dual gang 466pf per section variable caps from them (600 volts rms) for $15.00 each.
