Remember CQ 75 from "Oh-Hi-Ho"?
« on: November 13, 2005, 10:07:08 PM »

Back in the mid and late '60s I used to hear a guy on the low end of 75 meters calling CQ for hours on end, every evening. As a Novice, I couldn't work him, but I gathered he was pretty well known in the Ohio / Pennsylvania area.

He would plaintively call CQ 75, give his call a bunch of times, and then his town. I can't remember the call or the town,(I think it was K8??? and I'm pretty sure one of the letters was Z) but the part I do remember is the way he said "Oh-Hi-Ho".

Anybody remember him, his call or his town?

Greetings:
I thank that you are describing W8RHZ in Twinsburg, OH.
Seems like his name was Harry. He had a card file entry
on every contact that he ever made. He was able to recall
my dad's place of employment and my sister's name etc...
He ran a Kilowatt to a Collinear array and was very
strong at my home in Auburn, Indiana.
Hope this helps,
Larry, W9QR

You just might have hit the nail on the head. The QRO and big antenna would explain why he stood head and shoulders above the heterodynes and 75m QRM (Today doesn't hold a candle to what it was like back in the day!!!)...

The cardfile stikes a chord... I seem to be able to recall him saying something about a card file... Of course after 40 years, I can "remember" anything you tell me to -- HI HI!

The call is "almost" right, and I'll bet that that is the guy I heard. He spoke very slowly but with precise enunciation, and always said "Oh-HI-ho" for Ohio.

Henry or Harry seems like the right name, too, now that I think about it.

THANKS for the info. Now that won't be rattling around in my head any more -- HI HI!
