I imagine Mr. Austin is likely sk, but it's conceivable that he is not. I hope he's with us... He was my first real elmer. 30 years ago. I have been off radio for many years, and coming back, it hits me how I would like to let Mr. Austin know he had an impact.
I'd like to know if anyone knows/knew him, and what his call sign is/was. I don't find him in the ULS database.
I remember his story of copying CW during WWII despite Japanese attempts to jam. He was quite amused at how he could tell the jammer was getting frustrated by thwarted attempts to block Mr. Austin's flight's communications. It was evident by the way the bug was being used. To hear Mr. Austin tell it, it was quite funny. Not having been there, I could never do the story justice or convey the humor of it.
And it left quite an impression on me about the value of CW in a noisy radio world.
I'd like to invite any other such stories of cutting through the crud, in honor of my old friend.
