Looking for John F. Tilch's call sign (SK)
« on: June 06, 2008, 10:38:12 AM »

John F. Tilch was my great uncle who passed away in 1987. He was a long time ham. I didn't become a ham until well after his passing. I can find no member of my family who remembers his call sign. He operated in El Paso, Texas and Carrizozo, New Mexixo area as my memory serves me.

Does anyone remember him , have a QSL card or a old call book that might list this? It would be greatly appreciated if anyone can assist or remembers him.

Thank you

Was he licensed in 1987 when he passed away?

I have many callbooks and would be glad to
look for him if you could narrow it down
a little.  Thousands of names are in each
call district, and a name search in each
callbook is very time consuming...

Dear Ron,

Thank you ever so much for your reply and your time on this. With absolute certainty he was operating and licensed as a ham in El Paso in 1967 as I visited his shack.
Other than that I have very little else to go on about Uncle John's ham experiences. I do not know if he was licensed in 1987. Please don't go through  a lot of trouble as this has been a tough nugget to find for years.

Again many thanks for your effort. It is appreciated.

Best regards,

John

Your great-uncle first appeared in my Spring 1961callbook as
KN5EIE, 1092 Christy St., El Paso Texas. He was probably
first licensed in the early months of 1961 or very late 1960.
He was still listed in the 1997 callbook, although he passed
away in November of 1987.

KN5EIE was first issued to a Tim McClanahan, 1135 Westfall,
San Antonio Texas in 1957, but he apparently did not upgrade.
I believe you had one year to get to General in 1957, as I did in 1953.
The callsign remained unissued until John got it in 1961.

K5EIE has since been reissued to Maxwell Moon of Minneapolis
under the vanity callsign program. According to his bio on eham.net,
he operates 100% CW which is why he would want this particular call.

I have made a copy of the callbook pages for you and will get it
in the mail at your Duluth address. I could not locate an email
address for you on QRZ.com or Buckmaster.

Dear Ron,

Thank you again for your efforts and time and finding this lost puzzle piece. I'm astounded you found it. One ham in another forum told me that such a request was nearly impossible to ascertain a few years ago.

I really can't thank you enough as Uncle John and Aunt Christine were very proud of John's amateur radio. He had his shack in Aunt Christine's dining room.
Hell would freeze if I asked for and received such an accommodation.

Should our paths meets, the beer is on me. Thank you again. I can't wait to pass this along to some cousins.

Many thanks

While I don't know when this conversation took place, I was an El Paso ham during this time and talked to K5EiIE most every day. His radio handle was "Fred." --  H. Dan Smith - K6MFT
