Does anybody remember Jim, W8GRT?

I never ran into him on the air, but he was a regular on the Fidonet ham echos, back in the early 1990s.  Heck of a nice guy.

I see his call isn't in the database; I don't know if he let it lapse, or if he's not with us any more--he had some chronic health problems, if I remember correctly.

Not finding much about him via google; wondered if anybody else remembered Jim W8GRT from Fidonet.

I remember him. I ran a FidoNet BBS back in those days. I do remember that he had some health issues. If I remember him correctly if he were still among us his call sign would still be active.

I tried to send a reply by email but it bounced--wanted to thank you for adding a comment.  Jim was a heck of a nice guy and it's nice to know there are others who remember him.  I saw something on the web that mentioned that he was first licensed after WWII, so he was older than I knew, back in '91 or so.  I suspect you're right that he's not around any more.  But I sure was pleased to see someone else who remembers Jim W8GRT--thanks for commenting!  --ken ac4rd

The record shows he died in 1995. He was 61.

Wow. What a set of memories blew in the door with this subject. I still have most of my Fidonet emails and all the assorted programs that I had to string together in DOS to get into a local BBS in Austin. My mentor in Fidonet AND the local BBS owner are both dead now. <sigh> Time flies. Finally got on an Internet email connection in 1996 and have seldom looked back. I do dig out an email or three every now and again to surprise those I sent mails to then and let 'em know there ARE folks who save emails.

Jim was a very nice fellow and a good correspondent. Sometimes, I wish Fidonet were still around. I've nosed around the European Fidonet remainders and wasn't very impressed with them. Usenet was also fun, before it sank into the murky muck. Things have gotten so spread out that I seldom know where to turn these days to ask questions of note. The forums are a penny a thousand...forget about a dime a dozen!
