Icom IC-718 For MARS use.
« on: February 04, 2004, 01:00:55 PM »

Does anyone have any experience with the Icom IC-718 on MARS frequencies? Also I asked Icom if modifications for MARS would void the warranty and this was their response:

Simple question:

Will modifying my new IC-718 for MARS operation void the warranty?

I have an ICOM 718 in my emergency commo trailer, in PACTOR service on a 5 MHZ MARS freq.  No issues to date.

It is a really nice radio for the money. I did equip it with the DSP (which was free at the time) and a high-stability TCXO.

I use it as one of my two MARS HF rigs.  Works great, but their is supposedly an issue with slow turnaround time on 'burst modes' such as ARQ (see the QST review for the rig).  Works fine on FEC and RTTY and of course, voice.  Very easy to mod, as well.

Dear Fellow Amateur. I used to be in Air Force MARS many years ago. I was thinking about joining ARMY MARS? But, I don't have TNC equipment for PACTOR. Is PACTOR a partial requirement now? I have EVERYTHING but PACTOR and ARQ AMTOR. I can do FEC AMTOR and all other digital modes. Hope you don't mind me asking?
I am using MIX W for most of the Digital Modes. I am using MMTTY for RTTY and MMSSTV for Slow Scan TV. I have noticed that Navy MARS has been practicing SSTV on 4007 KHZ USB at about 0300 to 0400 ZULU Time. At least on the WEST Coast. Does ARMY MARS also use SSTV? Just wondering? Also, can one specialize in their participation in ARMY MARS like DIGITAL as an example? Thanks.
