Digital mode setup
« on: January 10, 2007, 11:48:25 AM »

Good afternoon,

This might be better off in another forum, but since my question deals with MT63, I thought some of you might have some ideas.
I participate in Navy-MArine Corps MARS (NNN0XPDT), and just upgraded my equipment to include digital capability.
Currently, my equipment consists of: Icom IC-718 HF Transceiver (with MARS mod), MFJ 993B Intellituner, Inverted-vee dipole antenna (apex at 35'), and most recently, the West Mountin Radio RigBlaster Plug & Play.  I am using IZ8BLY MT-63 software.
I have had no trouble receiveing and decoding MARS traffic just using the soundcard, but now that I have the RigBlaster Plug & Play, I am trying to get my rig to transmit.  The problem seems to be that when I installed my MT-63 software, it assigned the comm port as Com 9.  Well, MT-63 only goes up to Com 4, or com 6 I think (I don't have the software up and running in front of me).  The question is: Is there a way to either re-assign my hardware (the RigBlaster Plug & Play) to another com port, or is there a way to make the software recognize additional com ports up to com 9?

This is my first time working with digital modes (ham and MARS), so this is new territory for me.  Any ideas?

Thanks!

Gerrit,

I don't use the Rigblaster plug and play.  I have the Rigblaster Plus, which I have operating through a USB to serial port converter (my PK-232 is assigned Com 1).  My USB to serial port converter is automatically assigned COM 2 and 3 by Windows.  The MT-63 software only goes to Com 4, I believe.  You need to go to the control panel on Windows, and then to System and then to your device manager to check your com ports.  Unless you have 8 other com ports in use, it would be very unusual to see a Com Port 9 assigned by Windows.  Go to file/settings or preferences in your MT-63 software and try assigning different ports to your rigblaster.  If you have your TNC on Com 1, then try Com 2 and see if it works.  You also might try uninstalling and reinstalling the software if all else fails.  Keep us posted.

O.k.
I was able to get the radio, computer and interface to all play nice together.  I can't wait to try it out on the net tonight!

Thanks for your suggestions, everyone.

Hi Gerit,

You may want to subscribe to the Yahoo forum that covers all things digital:

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/MARS_Digital/

With MARS-ALE we support com 1..16, currently we working up an MT-63 ARQ protocol which would have FEC enhancements but be backward compatible with MT-63 as now known, the MARS-ALE forum would need to be monitored for follow those developments.
