Why do I like MARS?
Well, I was a MARS member, got out, and then rejoined. I am a member of TN Army MARS.
MARS is disciplined operations, on clear frequencies. MARS has good training, all of it free, and helpful members. Ask a question, you will have not one but I group saying "I'll help you".
MARS is "on the move", and with our new Chief Army MARS at the lead, the program is transistioning into one of the best EMCOMM groups in the good ol USA. It has the best digital messaging system hands down, with the addition of Winlink2000 to it's arsenal. With our clear frequencies, large station base, mirrored system with multiple PMBO's, and the use of HF, VHF, Telpac, and Telnet, we can "git-er-done". And, with other modes, such as MT-63, even more options for communications are available.
MARS takes a deliberate approach to any "new" thing before it is added. It is researched, then tested fully before it becomes a part of the MARS system.
Is it for those who do want to meet the requirements? No. But, I have found it to be a rewarding, learning experience that has made me a better operator, and I enjoy the fellowship of a great group of folks (men & women alike) in the TN Army MARS and those also from around the US.
It can be the same for you, if you are willing to devote a little time each week to study and operations. If you are interested, ask around and talk to MARS members in you area. Google Army MARS or Military Affiliate Radio System for more info.
