CURIOUSHAM, please stop making a fool of yourself. You post no ham call or MARS call, so you have zero, can you read that, zero, credibility in discussing the future of MARS. And as a 26 year veteran of Naval Aviation I take offense of your name calling of sailors and heroes (attacking LON and Navy MARS). Go back under your rock.

Are you really a ham? You sure present a poor example. Ever since I got my license in 1961 at 14 I thought hams were intelligent people. I guess there are exceptions. Hiding behind a screen name, making fun of people and orginzations you don't agree with and using childish terms. Shame on you. Grow up.

K7VV you are right about feeding the troll. His last post calling us cry babies and reminding us this is his thread. So he can have it all to himself.

Dwight,

That was a very nice reply (really).
I appreciate the information and apologize if I have upset anyone.

I stepped away from the thread for a few days.
(also took some Ginkbo, vinpocetine, and pregnenolone - hihi)

I concluded that I do not need to have plans for every possible occurrence or outcome.  It is just waste of energy and there may be no possible plan at present.

For now I have a customer callsign, and enjoy the nets on my days off.  When someday I get off my bad work shift, I'll be back to being in nets almost every day.

Someday someone in authority will ask, do all these AANs really need their license?  And well, I don't need it in my current job function.  An incident with comms failure may occur at work, but it won't be my job to fire up the radios and winlink essential information to HQ.  I enjoyed the 2 year detailed position. Incidents were the best part - added some excitement to a boring day in the office.  I have some funny stories I can tell.  But, the job detail has ended.

If/when I lose the Mars license, then I'll figure out if I can become a regular Mars member.  Even if some essential events are scheduled to be convenient for the vast majority of people, it probably won't be convenient or possible for me due to my shift.  But who knows?  I won't be working this bad shift forever.  I may not even work for this employer forever?

As you mentioned, I seem to have some incorrect information about ongoing participation requirements - so it will not be as difficult as I thought.

If my license gets revoked tomorrow - I don't have a clear plan.  I'm better to wait and think about it later when it happens.

Navy Mars had been my plan, so I mourn its imminent "sunsetting".

Sorry to have upset people.
Maybe its better to keep more of my thoughts in my mind instead of in print.

Dwight:

Would you please drop me an email. I have a couple of questions and don't feel like starting a tangental discussion here.

Thanks,

Lon

Howard,

No problem.

Sometimes we tend to build up a problem in our mind to be bigger than it actually is, and it generally never materializes as big or bad as we thought it would be.   I know I get that way before every trip to the dentist ;-).

Whether Navy MARS stays or goes, I look at the time I have spent being a Navy MARS operator as one of the highlights of my time as a ham.
Not only has it given me an enormous sense of pride to participate, it has also made me a better ham.

I was able to use the MARS station while stationed aboard a destroyer to talk with family back home while deployed.  It gives me a great deal of satisfaction to provide that same service to our sailors today, as well as to provide emergency communications services should our country call.

I hope Navy-Marine Corps MARS stays around and I thank all the MARS Ops from all the branches for their service and participation.

Sincerely,

Gerrit Rickwalt

So,
it appears that the program continues unchanged in direction and content; which is to say, no real mission or reason for existance.

The ship continues to sink, but won't be completely sunk for another year.

Why prolong the agony?

"You need to look into Army MARS. Right now, it's definitely the most proactive of any MARS services. Lots of digital modes. Of course, the membership,
training, and participation requirements are tougher now as well. May not be for everyone."

I left Army MARS about 5 years ago because it was no longer an organization who's primary purpose was to serve those who serve.  It has been morphed into a service to serve other government agencies.

The new Army MARS is not what it used to be.  If, on the other hand, desire to compete with ARES or RACES, or better yet, find yourself being a volunteer bridge for the airport TSA folks to pass messages back and forth, its your cup of tea.

NAVY/MARINE CORPS and AIR FORCE MARS remained in spirit to serve those who serve in the military and their families.  If there truly is no longer a need to do that, then the programs should sunset.

As a taxpayer, I do not think it appropriate for government agencies to "contract" for supplementary radio communications services that are for agency business purposes.  Emergency or otherwise.  They should, if there is a continuing need, purchase, install and train their PAID STAFFS to perform needed business functions.

Maybe its time to reflect back on people who really helped when a bridge was needed to deployed personnel and their families.  Do you think General/senator Barry Goldwater, k7UGA, if alive today, would support sending members out to provide a message service for airport security people?

Yes, the new MARS, or at least the Army/Kachina Corporation version isn't for everyone.

Navy-Marine Corps MARS like Army MARS and Air Force MARS are all budgeted for 1 year.  If anything, we are getting rid of an un-necessary layer of management.

I can't speak for other NMC-MARS regions, but in R10 now,
we are providing Winlink and other digital comms support for the Civil Air Patrol, and within 90 days or so we will be doing the same for the largest international disaster relief agency for Oregon and south Idaho.  Yhis was by no accident, they personnaly saw what we can do remote or portable and wanted us.  Were doing CAP as Army MARS referred them to us as they didn't have the capability in R10.  So are we doing anything in ECOM, yes and very fast.  Do we want want members that just check into nets once in a while, no.  We want members that will participate.  Thats the only way any MARS organization will survive.  And I must say with working agreements with Oregon Army MARS, they are an asset for region ten.

Sorry man, you're way out of date.  None of the MARS services have had the morale and welfare mission as primary for about a decade now.  Technology has rendered that mission obsolete.
I was in Navy MARS for seven years before I transferred to Army MARS last year, and in that seven years, I can't remember more than one or two MARSGRAMS being handled in our nets, and they were done probably about 2001 or so.   Army, Air Force and Navy all have the same mission and have had the same mission for years, and that is to support DOD and other government agencies in emergencies.
