Palm V and Magellan GPS
« on: February 27, 2001, 07:22:48 PM »

I have a new Magellan/Rand McNally Streetfinder GPS unit. This GPs attaches to the Palm V like all other Palm V accessories; the arrangement blocks the PDA's serial connector, for good reason.

To conserve battery power (2 AAA batteries) the GPS unit accepts 12VDC through a mini plug on the side. The PDA does not accept external power other than through the serial connector; it requires 4VDC.

What I'd like to do is tap into the 12VDC, inside the GPS unit's case, and bring +4VDC to the correct pins of the serial connector. I have already opened the GPS case and verified there is room for some small circuitry.

Without this mod, the Palm is capable of only about an hour of GPS use. I plan to use the setup on a bicycle, attached to a 12V gel-cell.

I will take pictures of the GPS unit and supply connector pinouts, if necessary, to anyone willing to assist with this mod.

Please help me navigate my bike rides!
