I HATE WHER I LIVE SOMETIMES
« on: February 14, 2007, 06:11:55 PM »

I am in English Indiana and there are very few ham clubs here.. Also there are very few places to take your exams. The closest 2 are about 50 miles from me.
I do have a nice place to talk from though.. I live on a big hill with no trees within 400 feet.. I use to talk skip on the c.b. radio. But for the last several years it has got bad enough there that me and my wife are moving to ham radio..

It's nearly 50 miles to the nearest exam for me as well but I love where I live, near a small town in rural Nebraska.

Be glad you live in rural America. I drive 8 Mi to Wal-mart, 34+ miles one way to work, and it's quit, best of all no other hams are close enough to me too cause any interference, or me too them. I don't think I would like another station with in 4 or 5 miles of me. You would be hard pressed to get that kind of separation in a city. Enjoy the country life. One down side to country life is your car will have 100 k miles on by the time is paid for.

"I am in English Indiana and there are very few ham clubs here.. Also there are very few places to take your exams. The closest 2 are about 50 miles from me. "

Here's my recommendation:  Study up for the Technician and General exams at the same time.  If you find somewhere to test, you can go, take both elements at once, get your General ticket, and you won't really have to worry about making another trip to test.

Also, you may not have to travel to take an exam.  All you have to do is get three VE's together who are accredited with the same VEC, and they can test you whenever and wherever they choose.  So you might want to ask around.  If you can find one VE, I'm sure he can get two others together and get you tested without going a long distance.

And really, if I were you, I wouldn't worry about joining a club.  I mean, there's nothing wrong with joining one, but being a ham certainly doesn't mean you HAVE to.
