Westell model 6100 internet modem
« on: May 28, 2009, 07:30:33 AM »

Our Westell internet modem model #6100 is generating tons of RFI on the HF bands.
Our DSL customer service and tech service informed me that they never heard of this problem.  They said they have no cure for the RFI.

The RFI is emitted only when (1) the ethernet output line is attached to box or (2) when the input phone line is attached and/or when (3) the power plug is attached.

I tried adding torids to the above cables with no luck.

Any ideas to cure this RFI/EMI from this modem?
Thank you.

Try to get them to replace the modem. The older models (circa 2004,2005) didn't have that kind of problem. It is their responsibility to provide you with a clean modem when they provide service.

They will not replace the modem unless I pay for it.

Please try amidon ft-240-77 ferrite cores by winding
about 12-15 turns on the power cord, and the phone line.  also, use a shielded cat 5 cable from the pc to the modem. maybe some snap-on ferrite cores type
31 from dx engineering on the shielded cat 5.  another idea is to put the modem in a aluminum box with with the cores on the outside.  the amidon 77 mix is tuned for the hf frequencies.  also look at the power supply for the modem, try a true transformer type if you can find the correct voltage, if is a switching type it will make hf noise as well.

I believe the modem runs off 12 VDC.  Try eliminating the wall wart it runs off of and use a clean power supply or a 12 volt battery to check it.  A lot of times the power supply is the cause of most RFI problems which are only evident when cables are connected.
