VX-5 and AO-27
« on: September 02, 2001, 06:20:49 PM »

Hi Everyone

I'm considering buying the VX-5 and an arrow antenna.  I was curious if anyone has had any luck using the HT with AO-27 and that antenna.

I can't vouch for the VX-5, but the Arrow antenna works well on AO-27 with my Alinco G5
HT here at grid square AP74.

I use one with two Ic-T8 HTs. Works great!

The VX-5 will not do Full Duplex which is extremely helpful when working satellites.  Full Duplex allows you to hear the downlink while you are transmitting on the uplink so you can tell if you are hitting the satellite or not.

It's a great radio, but that is one feature I wish it had.  The only way around it is to deal with half-duplex or buy a second HT for the uplink.

I just purchased a VX-5r and have not tried it on the fm birds yet. I have talked to many folks on UO-14 and AO-27 (and SO-35 while it was alive) who use a VX-5r and N3ZLL uses one with an MJF 5/8 wave rubber duck antenna and I hear him on almost every pass in the am. I use the arrow antenna with a mobile radio and listen with the HT on uhf. That way I have full duplex and can hear myself when on the bird. The VX-5r is not full duplex so you have to "hope" you got into it. It's a hard way to make a qso with it alone.
